natural casing help?
« on: February 26, 2007, 10:05:20 AM »
I have a partial hank of hog casings in my fridge in the garage in a ziplock bag that froze and broke apart.  The package said the casings are packed in purified salt.  What is purified salt and what is the liquid that is in the package of casings?  I have too many casings to just throw away so I am going to try to save them.
Thanks for the help.

Before losing anything, If you have a vacuum sealer, I would seal it back up.

Purified salt is salt with none of the additives listed in table salt, ie. iodine, etc.. From what I gather from reading, it is just plain, straight NaCl. (sodium chloride)

The liquid is probably just the moisture from condensation or from the liquid being pulled out of the casings by the salt.

You know the old funny way of cleaning casings? You take two kids give each one and end and tell them to blow. The looser gets a face fulla....well...guess.
