New wood for my Contender Rifle
« on: February 26, 2007, 01:16:39 PM »
Over the weekend I took my G2 set up for rifle with its 3 barrels out of the safe and decided that it needed a better stock.  I have a .204 Ruger, .17 Mach2 and .17HMR barrels for it and they all are great shooters.  The trigger on the G2 is just like I like it.  I have good scopes on each barrel.  The stock is a factory walnut stock and has to be the most butt ugly chunk of walnut TC ever carved into a stock.  It also is about an inch shorter lop than I like.

I looked around and decided on a Gunstocks Inc. Thumhole sporter buttstock and a Heavy Sporter style forstock.  I gave them a call to arange the longer lop, they gave me a call to correct the mistake I made on the order form, and now I have one coming.  I thought about a laminated stock, but chose walnut once again.  I guess I am a traditionalist.  When it gets here I have some work to do finishing it and opening up the barrel channel in the forestock, but now is the time to do it before the weather makes outside stuff possible.

They seem like first class folks to deal with, and I will let you know how this works out.

Excellent choice Keith.  Ed and the gang at Gunstocks Inc. do great work.  Both my Encore rifles wear their stocks.  One is a laminate and the other is cherry.   Both turned out really nice.  The instructions they include yield a nice finish.

Keith, I recently just finished a thumbhole laminate stock that I got from them , turned out great , I will see if I can get a picture , there  was alot of extra work inletting the forearm for the bullberry hanger bar . I used a very hard and durable two part clear-coat .

Ramos , what did gunstocks inc. suggest for finishing ? I don't remember getting any info on that??

It involved using, I believe, Tru Oil finish first.  You apply it liberally until the wood won't soak in anymore.  Repeat that process after sanding at least a couple more times.  You then take some steel wool and rub it down to the wood once again.  After wiping it clean you should have an extremely smooth surface with all of the pores filled with the Tru Oil finish.  You then follow up with some Linspeed stock finish.  This stuff dries very fast.  You can let it dry on its own for a glossy finish or rub it dry with a soft cloth.  Repeat that process two or three more times.  It yields a very nice satin finish.  If you end up with a glossy finish and want a satin finish you can rub it down with a piece of burlap.  I'll post some pictures when I have a chance.
