canoe gun?

Although I did not know it when I started the project I built a caplock canoe gun. I had an old cva hawkins sitting around that I built from a kit many years ago . I had not shot this gun in the last ten years  I did not do a real good job on the stock but the gun was a shooter around here you can't give a sidelock away  so when a friend got a lathe I got an idea. I cut the barrel  to 16.5" [just so I would not have to argue with anyone about the legality of shorter m.l.] squared the barrel in the lathe and crowned it a little. I planed the cheek piece off the stock ,I'm a lefty,[gun is right]  thinnedt the side of stock oposite of lock about 1/8" and remounted the front sight  I gave the wood a coat of warm oxblood shoe polish then have been rubbing it down once a day with a mixture oh linseed oil mineral spirits and old english funiture polish to give the oxblood a brown tint don't know if it will hit anything  but I have had fun remodeling it  and if it isn't  a shooter It would look cool on th wall  plus All I have in it is my time. witch with the bad weather I would have been wasting any way

That stock finish looks neet in the pic does it look less red in person? Cool carbine you will have to give a range report.

It looked almost pink with just the shoe polish  the linseed oil mixture is taking the pink down to reddish brown  My goal was not to spend anything on it, just use what I had laying around I thought I would have to buy new sights.butby  moving the front sight closer  I can see it better than I ever could with the long barrel  I could not see the sight well is the reason I quit using it ten years ago  It has a full buckhorn rear sight  I am going to try to use it like a ghost ring when the snow melts and the mud dries up a little I'll give you a range report

Way cool I have always prefferd carbines  . I wouldnt have thought of shoe polish but that is one cool way to save cash and have some fun. Hopefully with the better sight picture your remodel will give the ole girl new life for ya.

A couple of years ago Iwas given a 54 cal TC barrel that had been abused and the first few inches of the barrel were ruined.So I took on pretty much the same project that you did.I bought a stock blank from track of the wolf, found a used lock at a ml shoot and had a box full of old parts that were given to me over the years. The but plate I made from  a piece of sheet brass.The barrel is now 20 inches and shoots 1 hole groups at 50 yds.I use a pillow ticking patch with homemade lube, with a 530 ball over 80 grns of 3f. iIalso have a 58 cal zouave with a 16 1/2  barrel that I got off one of the auction sites for almost nothing. In it I shoot the lee modern minnie over 70 grns of 3f. Because of the short sighting plane I don't use either one over 75 yds.Both of them are excellent heavy cover deer gunn and a blast (pun intended ) to shoot.

   I made some smoke today  this little rifle will shoot I was shooting free hand at about 40 yards.It was COLD and windy and I was able to keep  them in a 2" circle  as bad as the conditions where I am happy with it.
