Ruger Magnum DGR. Is this a good rifle?

I noticed that most comments here in regards to a DGR is for either a Winchester 70 or a CZ.  I've been seriously looking at the Ruger Magnum Rifle in either 416 Rigby or 458 Lott.  Probably the only thing I don't like about the Ruger's is the large amount of wood at the bolt handle... To me it seems like it might be difficult to grasp during high stress moments.

BTW, some of the Circassian walnut stocks on these rifles are either great or they looks very average, like a standard model 77 Ruger's wood stock.  Will this stock hold up?

What are your thoughts (good or bad) about this rifle as a DGR?  Am I missing something because I don't see it recommended much?  Why is that?

It is very well liked by a lot of shooters on accuratereloading.

Objections to the rifle are usually based on its weight, cost and also the "recoil plate system" that is used instead of a recoil lug on the action. The 'recoil plate system" works well but in combination with Ruger's angled front screw they are not the easiest rifles to bed. The salo 75s use a similar system.

I had one of the early versions in 375 H&H and they had a problems caused by the front sling swivel being a band around the barrel (in the forend) and with the screw section protruding through the forend. A nightmare for anyone who wanted the rifle bedded and free floated.

The Model 70 gets a lot of play and I guess just because it is "the Model 70" and the CZ is rough but cheap. Many feel with a bit work on polishing the action (or just plain old use) that the CZ will end up as good but a lot cheaper.

I looked at the Ruger's when I was after a large bore DG rifle. I went with the CZ in 416 Rigby. I liked the CZ better than Ruger, the CZ had a better feel than the Ruger did. But that is just my opinion.

Doesn't Ruger Magnum rifle already have those cross bolts in the stock by the action and the CZ doesn't.

Check again jro45, CZ is installing the Crossbolts in all there big bore guns now. But my CZ came with one that I bought 2 years ago.

Redhawk1 I went to CZ's web sight and the only cross bolt that I saw was the CZ's magnum. If they are putting them in [cross bolts] they should put them on there web sight.

JRO45 Redhawk is correct all the CZ in 375 and up now come with two cross bolts , this is new for 2007. Maybe there a little slow when it comes to updating there website.

Sounds good to me. Those CZ rifles are reasonable.

The ruger RSM in 458 Lott, is one of my favorite guns right now. It points naturally for me. Good, almost-Bond Street quality for an American company, and you won't find this in any other rifle for a cheaper price. Very accurate. Everything one would want when on a budget.
I've seen the cz's and the ruger, in my opinion, is more pleasant to the eye, and in it's handling.
Does not kick at all really. Of course, I'm used to .577's too, so that opinion might not be shared by many others.

I ordered my 458 Lott. It is a CZ and alot cheaper then the Ruger.

Got my 458 Lott today . A CZ550 Safari Magnum. It is one sweet rifle. The stock is Laminated. Shoots like a dream. I shot a couple of 500 gr bullets going 2300 FPS. The recoil was hardly noticeable.
