30-30 Loads???
« on: May 10, 2003, 06:28:03 PM »
Hi everyone,

I'm reqesting any data on your favorite 30-30 loads. I have a new Super 14 hunter that hasn't been fired yet.

I found the article on handgunhunt.com with a couple of loads for a Super 14. I'm interested in 110 grain bullet varmint and 135-140 grain bullet deer size hunting loads.

Myronman3,
Let me know how your efforts with the 147 grain FMJs works out...I bought a pile of them cheap and killed myself trying to get a good load for my super 14 and finally gave it up.  While the bullets will shoot good out of my M1, I couldn't get anything that resembled a decent group out of them in the contender.

thanks and regards,

I had some promising results this past weekend with the Hornady 130gr SSP's and AA2520.  One group with a "middle of the road" load went about .6" at 100yds.  Will definitely be testing this combination again.  Velocity was around 2150fps.

My standard load for this barrel, though, is a 150gr Ballistic Tip and W748 powder.  This is my most consistently accurate load and it will do 3/4" or less on a surprisingly regular basis!

Good luck ... Crayfish

Hi Joe,
I also have a contender with the 14" HUnter barrel in 30-30. I have very good results with my reloads useing 30.5 grains of Reloader 7, 130 grain Hornady singl shot pistol bullets and Winchester primers. It will shoot about 1"@ 100 yrds.. I got my first (handgun) deer with it this past year. Good luck and good shooting!

well i tested these loads out.   the 125 ballistic tips are accurate with very little recoil,  but they burn a little dirtier than i would like.   i am sure that increasing the charge a little will solve that problem.   the 147 fmj's burned  cleaner,  and were good enough to splat gallon water jugs at 25,50, 75, and 100 yards.   i have to fine tune them, though.   anyone with experience on this, feel free to chime in.

Most of my .30-30 Contender shooting has been done with a Commercial Reload that I get from my local dealer. This ammo consists of a 125gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip (seated quite long and it touches the lands in most barrels) loaded with Accurate Arms #2230 powder. I have chronographed this ammo in 3 different Super 14 .30-30 Contender Barrels as well as in my Super 14 .30-30 Ackley Improved Contender Barrel (used as fireform loads). This ammo chronographs between 2350 FPS and 2400 FPS depending on the barrel. For the most part this is a 1" load for 5 shots off a bench at 100 yards (In the different barrels I have had groups have been as large as 1 1/4", and as small as 3/4").

Thought I had better chime in here since my load has not been mentioned.  135 gr. Seirra Single Shot Pistol Bullet and IMR 4198.  Shoots good and clean for me.

Well, I see there are several shooters here who have tried out the T/C 30-30. I just got the Burris red dot mounted yesterday and picked up a box of Federal 125s to site in and start my brass collection. I hope to grab some more brass at the range as there is always someone banging away with a Marlin or Winchester out there.

Does anyone have any favorites for brass. I've read some good things on Winchester, but it's almost like the Chevy/Ford thing.

Joe, You may have read me on this site badmouthing R-P brass, and I have.  However, that was for forming other rounds....ie .30 Herret, .357 Herret, 30/30AI, 7-30Waters, .219Zipper.  For shooting "plain ole thutty-thutty" I actually prefer the R-P.  BTW, my favorite load is the 125BT over Rel7.  I had 16" barrel that was about to become a tent peg, but this load turned it into a tackdriver.  GOOD SHOOTIN',  Walt   :D

Bayrunner,
Try the Corbon 150 grain Single shot hunter ammo, probably the best factory stuff around for your needs.
You can get it from Midsouth shooter's supply or your other local Corbon dealer.

Hey Graycg____ Thanks for tip, I think I might just try some of those Corbon 150gr.S.S. Hunter ammo from Midsouth, just out of curiousity, what do you think the velocity of that round might be out of a 11 inch. barrel.THANKS  BAYRUNNER
