Mine has the pistol grip. Whether this affects felt recoil I don't know, but I don't find mine that over bearing. I would not sit down and shoot 50 - 100 rounds mind you, but for 20 at a time it's fine. They have good recoil pads on them which certainly helps. If you shoot an 06 with out difficulty, the 300 won't bother you. imo...

I'm not sure of it's weight but I put a 2x7 Bushnell Elite 3000 on mine. I would not describe the 300 BLR as a dogging gun. They are long in barrel and are a little on the heavy side. If you're after a dogging gun you might want to go with the BLR in 308. It is shorter and lighter and still very capable. The 300 is great medicine for moose, bear and puts the smackdown on deer. All in all I like mine so much I sold my 700. Sure the 700 will give me better groups but bolts are boring ;) ;D and the moose don't care what kind of groups I get. I use 180 gr Winchester Accubonds for everything.

Personal opinion only, but these days, I would look at a .300WSM if I truly needed that much horsepower.  Reason being that the short action models handle mush better in my experience.  BOL
