Having a barrel chambered in 225 winchester. Any ideas on where to start anyone shooting this round. Have manuals just checking to see if there is a trend on powder/bullet combo for accuracy

I'll look tonight at some information that I found several years ago when I was trying to decide if the 223 Rem in a Handi was enough and what it could be rechambered to if not.  I'll get back to you.

I always thought the 225 case necked up to .25 caliber or 6.5mm would make a sweet little deer rifle but I've never gotten around to actually doing it.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.

.225 is a virtual duplicate of the .219 Zipper Improved. I think there was a small difference in shoulder angle and, of course, thicker rim on the .30/30 case from which the .219 descended. SOO... anything said about the .30/30 family and its many descendants applies and the .225 has a bit stronger/stouter brass. (It was to compete with the .22/250, the Swift had been dropped, and work thru bolt actions with the smaller "semi-rim.") The family seemed to thrive on the medium rate powders. 3031 thru 4320, maybe. Ball equivelents. Enough less than Swift to have better barrel life, or so projected. It used to be in the manuals. Mr. Brown, eabco.com, has "house cartridges" on the similar shaped case using the .30/30 rim. 6mm but no .224. luck.

iranger, I hope a lot of guys have new 225's made up. The 225 is the PARENT case for the 6.5JDJ round. I have quite a few pieces of brass on hand ,but I always worry about the factories dropping them from production.

I always used IMR3031 & 55 grain bullets in mine. I would't give the load i used. It was taken from n old Speer manual  and now they say this load is to hot. Sold the gun to a friend of mine 25 years ago and he still uses this same load for everything from woodchucks to whitetails and has no problems.

I shoot a 225 Win Model 70. Not much more that a 223 but I  tend to like things that are different.
Load data is not hard to find, most load books have it as well as load data websites

Hornady and Hodgdon data shows the .225 Win well ahead of the .223 with the 55-grain bullets - which of course it is, due to much larger case capacity.  It is only 100 fps behind the .22-250 with 55-grain bullets, again using Hornady and Hodgdon data.  Powder choices are the same as the .22-250, about between IMR3031 and H414 depending on the bullet weight.

I found that Nosler and Accurate Powder both have data for the 225 Win. online.  I found it by doing a search for 225 Winchester.

I will make myself a note to PM you tomorrow with the data from home.

Hi Guys,
Posted over in the Winchester group asking about a Model 70 XTR in 225 I ran across in the gunshop today.  Never heard of it before I saw it on the rack - intrigued me - glad to see you guys are familar and reload it.

Is ammo/brass hard to come by?  From what I read it can be very accurate - do you agree?  I like to punch holes in paper - small groups.

If the 70 I am looking at is shot out can I rebarrel?  How about changing calibers using 225 action?  Any input on the Model 70 XTR and the 225 caliber would be greatly appreciated.

I went in looking for a 204 CZ 527 but might have to postpone that and grab the 70 if is a keeper.  Shop is asking $425 with mounts and rings.  Thanks
