357 tracker
« on: February 28, 2007, 09:09:06 AM »
Hello all,

has anyone bought a 357 tracker in the last year?  if so how was it?  I love the look, feel and size of this gun and I want one but I have been waiting to see if the service gets any better.

thanks,
Carl

Carl:  My case is a little different than you asked for, but might help you.  I bought a 6" SS 357 Tracker about four years ago.  I have shot about 500 max 158 gr deer loads through it and about 2000 moderate 125 gr loads through it.  I love it and it has been a great handgun.  I have just a few minor complaints with this gun: 1) The orange rectangle PAINTED on the front sight wears off quite soon with shooting and cleaning (with Rem Oil) and I have repainted it on several times.  2) The extractor rod often turns loose after extended shooting and must be retightened (left hand threads).  Maybe I have just not tightened it hard enough and or I should try some loc-tite.  3) The ports are not really needed (IMHO) on gun of this size and caliber and just add a lot of noise.  Still, this is my favorite 357 and one of the last of my eight handguns I would consider giving up.
As far as Taurus service: about six months ago I sent in my PT745 after a few hot handloads (that worked fine in my Kimber 1911) caused some slide problems.  I had it back in 3 weeks working great free of charge (dealer paid shipping to Taurus).
I have no problem buying a Taurus.  As with any purchase, examine the gun carefully, preferably buy from a reliable dealer who can help you out should you have a problem.

I too had one from a few years ago. Traded it for a tricked out shotgun. Love the shotgun, but wish I had just given cash. Miss the pistol

I had the 4" and the sight paint came off mine too. No big deal as I tend to black out the front sight anyway.

I also agree that it probably doesn't need the ports. With heavy 357 rounds, it was nice to control recoil, but not necessary and ended up with particulate matter blasting back towards me.

I did a minor trigger job, basically just polishing and lubing mating surfaces in the trigger. A little bit of work went a long way to helping the feel of the trigger.
