Minimum Velocity For Hornady SST
« on: February 28, 2007, 09:15:42 AM »
I realize that more velocity means more expansion with a given bullet but at what velocity will Hornady SST's (150 grain .308) have to drop to before expansion is no longer at an acceptable level?
Can any one cite actual firing studies into any medium; water, balistic gelatin, wet paper etc.?

HAd the same questions when I was working up a load for a Contender several years back. The factory is the best place to get that info, then take it our and try it on some type of medium to be sure. I used several types of wet paper, water filled jugs, and such. THey all gave me an idea of what to expect at the different ranges I planned on shooting to. However they still are not an actual critter. For that I had the advantage of feral hogs as a pre hunt trial.

I was heading north for a whitetail hunt and needed to know what my longest ranges would be for reliable expansion, and went through them all. The Nosler BT's were in the 1700fps range, the Barnes were in the 1850fps range, and several others were all recommended in the 2000 fps range. These were for impact velociities and rated at double the caliber expansion.

It worked out pretty close after testing several in wet paper before the hunt and on a few hogs and deer afterwords. I had the chance to take a real nice buck on my hunt but passed it up as it was just not what I had gone after.

Just guessing with the actual shots I have used that bullet on, I would say somewhere in the 1800 - 2000 fps for inmpact, shoudl give you adaquate expansion. Possibly a little less depending on if you hit bone or not.

I called Hornady and they told me the minimum velocity for good expansion was between 1600 and 1800 fps.
