Nitro Express chambering
« on: February 28, 2007, 05:27:59 PM »
I posted this on the NEF centerfire site and was led to believe that my potential project would not work efficently. So, has anyone rechambered a B78 or Win 1885 in 45 caliber to a Nitro Express round. I think it would be a good way to own an English classic Nitro Express round in a good quality "American gun". Say 450 Nitro or 450 No 2 Nitro Express. The action on the Buff Classic might not be strong enough for the larger cartrige. I plan to not rechamber that gun. Advice?

I don't know if the 1885 action is big enough, other than that,  I don't see why it wouldn't work.  I have read a lot about such conversions on the Ruger #1 action, and it can't be that much bigger than the 1885 High Wall action.  Bowen Custom Guns (the guys famous for BIG revolvers) used to do a lot of work like that on the Rugers, and so does SSK Industries.  You might contact them and see what kind of advice they would have for you.  I wouldn't try to do a project like this on a H&R action, if you are going to spend the $$$ to get a classic Nitro rifle, do it with a classic rifle.

a bud has a ruger #1 in 450 nitro express  its not that disimiler to 45/120 sharps to look at 100 plus grn of smokles powder and a 500 grn bullet a lot of nock down power. kills at both ends if you dont like recoil lol.

Ive got a H&R Buffalo Classic thats being rechambered to 45-120.  Thats pretty close to 450Nitro.  Its 450-3 1/4.  Chech out Quick's posts on the NEF pages.
