recoil question
« on: May 11, 2003, 10:00:46 AM »
:D   Hey guys this is my first post here, take it easy on me!  I want to hunt elk next year and am thinking about a centerfire barrel for my 209x50 Encore.  Possibilities include a .270, .308 or 7mm Rem mag. Now, they might not be your first choice for elk, but I am curious more about recoil.  I have a 120 grain Pyrodex load that I am happy with and want to know how the recoil might compare to the high power calibers I have listed.  More Encore questions to come.  Thanks,  Jim

All three will take an elk.But out of the three you listed the 7mm Mag would be the one I would want.My first choice would be a 300Win Mag.The 7mm to me shouldn't be to bad on recoil.I had a M-70 7mm Mag and it was not as bad as my .54cal Hawken with 120grs of powder and a 380gr bullet.

2eagles,
I would venture a guess and say your muzzleloader load has about the same recoil level as a 7 MM Mag.  In fact I just ran some assumptions on my "Load From a Disk" for recoil and come up with about 23 ft-lbs for both a muzzleloader with a 240 gr bullet at 1700 fps as a 175 gr bullet at 3000 fps from a 7MM.

If you use a 240 gr. bullet with  sobot the kick isn't bad. I also load 365 gr. cast bullets (50 cal.) with 80 gr. of clean shot and it kicks like a horse.  I don't even want to try more than 80 gr. I would go as far to say with 120gr. it would be 40ft. lbs.

I would go with the 7mag. Not because its my favorite anyway  But it should work good on the Elk and the recoil is not bad. I had a 300 win mag encore and it was kind of punishing after shooting it a few times in a row, but its a caliber to. Personally, I would go with the 7mm RM. But I am kindof bisus, because after all it is my favorate.
