I think the general consensus was that a 6mm Improved would be a better choice for a .243 rechamber.

An in spec .243 is capable of being rechambered to 6mm AI, that would be determined by a chamber casting, the rechamber should be done by a gunsmith on a lathe, although it may be possible to do it by hand if that's whatcha meant, I wouldn't recommend it. ;)

I think a 6mm (Remington) anything is a better choice then a 243 (Winchester) anything. JMHO.

I think a 24" Bull Barrel 243 AI Handi would be a ton of fun! Go for it and tell us how it goes.

To do a real 243 AI you need to set the barrel back some which you can't do on a Handi, (I think this has been mentioned before).  You could run in a 243 AI reamer but you would not end up with a 243 AI chamber.  Larry

With the .243AI, you'll end up with a 40º Improved chamber that will be a fire form handload only chamber, you won't be able to shoot factory ammo in it to fire form since the barrel can't be set back as Larry mentioned. I think the 6mmAI will clean up the .243 Chamber and you should still be able to shoot factory 6mm ammo in it as a true Ackley should, but I'm not positive of that.

Do something different. Try the 6x284. Since you will be looking at handloading anyway.

Thinking of having mine rechambered to 243 AI anybody have one?

Another option (and one mentioned already here) is to go with a 6mm AI...which is doable provided it is chambered correctly to allow a snug fit ..I have been discussing doing this with several gunsmiths..and had plans on doing it with my Handi...but will now proceed doing it with my CVA 243...as I reported here..http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/smf/index.php/topic,111152.msg1098344944.html#msg1098344944
I just got my go gauge from Pacific in tonights mail.......so...1 part down...the dies and reamer to go...I talked with a gunsmith that Lonnie of Hornady suggested to me last week...and he is more than willing to take on this project...and the beauty of this is..he's within  a 5 hour drive of my home here...so I will be able to drive over to his shop...and get some good pics of him and the reaming process on it as it is being done... :) :) :) The beauty of the new dies should be apparent to anyone that has to fire form any cartridge...and will be a real great way of doing this...As Lonnie explained it to me...once the dies are set up correctly...you'll be able to just load them up after cleaning the cases and re priming..and go shoot them...Any small inconsistencies of the shoulders being slightly rounded will be ironed out on the first firing...He had no problem competing with his on the 1000 yard circuit...using his newly developed 7mm H&K round...and is precisely how he does it...I'll be letting you all know how they work for me...cause if the work for the Elite...they will work on any rifle...Handi's included ;)

There are other wildcats that use the 243 case as well...There is a ton of good information on the 243 and the others here  http://www.6mmbr.com/index.html

load it with a nice heavy bullet and it sounds like the worlds greatest deer round to me!!  I have to love the 243 since it is my grandpa's favorite round (never knew better growing up i guess)
