Got me a new Marlin .444 XLR
« on: March 02, 2007, 11:54:59 AM »
This has got to be one of these best rifles I have ever owned.  I never thought I would take a liking to one of these New XLR Marlins but it just reached out and grabbed  ;D

Congratulations!  I'll admit to looking long and hard at them myself, but I already have 3 444s now.

I did buy one in 45-70. It's a nice piece of work and fun to reloald for and shoot. Accurate too.

Oh man is this gun fun to shoot, or I should say the .444 Marlin is fun to shoot...... It really did not have much more felt recoil than the 30-30 I have..... just too sweet.  ;D

Congrats on the new XLR John...They are really fun to shoot..look good...and are usually very accurate..I went the 45-70 route..but the 444 was my second choice if I couldn't of found the one I did...

Hi Montanan:

Are you going to upgrade the trigger and the extractor? My trigger started out with a little creep but it seems to have worn itself into a nice crisp pull.

Aint shot it enough yet to notice any creep, but haven't even given an upgrade a thought yet though.

WTG Montanan. It sure is fun taking a new gun home and shooting it for the first time. Hope it brings you years of enjoyment.

Montanan:  Oh yeah, there is some incredible information on that site about the 444.  I followed some of the practices from there and have 3 444s that shoot realy heavy 43 bore slugs into the same hole at 100 yds.

You should just love your new XTR.  The very first 444 I had was a Marlin and I am still sorry to this day that I let it go.  Don't get me wrong, I love my Winchesters in 444 but I really liked that Marlin - looked a lot like the XTR but had the Monte Carlo stock and the insert.

I'm hoping the new XTRs have the Ballard (6 groove) rifled barrel, then you can have a ball with any load you shoot.

Good purchase on that one.  Mikey.

I love the new Marlin XLRs and when I get one it is definitely going to be a 444! My dad has one and I really love the cartridge. I've shot some really nice groups with it. The 444 is very UNDERATED in my opinion. My favorite bullet is the Hornady 265 gr. SP loaded on top of H-335 powder. I can't wait to get the same rifle you have. Good shooting and keep us updated on its performance.

Get yourself a Nikon Monarch 3-9x40 to go on top of it.

Lead Poison be sure you cartridge up before you get yours, I failed to order new ones and the factory loaded stuff cost $25.99 around here for Remington Express Ammo.  I have 40 cartridges now that I can shoot and reload for  ::) was real fun the first time around.  This rifle sure does not recoil as I thought it would cuz I was used to shooting 405-gr bullets or larger in my 45-70 and 45-90.

The .444 Marlin XLR is just a real sweet shooter, and sure hard to wipe the grin off my face after shooting it.

I'm now thinking of one in the 1895XLR, 1895, 1895G or the 1895GS cuz I still love the 45-70's

And now Barnes Bullets has a new 250-gr and 300-gr Triple Shock X-Bullet.

45 / 70 Caliber

  Diameter Weight Description S.D. B.C. CAT#
NEW .458" 250 gr TSX FN .170 .136 45841
NEW .458" 300 gr TSX FN .204 .163 45843

The recoil from these lighter bullets will be on par with the .444 Marlin  ;D
