I had both and chose to keep the .480 Ruger and let the .454 Casull go.

I would have to go with the 454 Casull. Not because it will shoot the 45 Colts, but I just like the 454 Casull better.  I see more gun shops that stock the 454 Casull over the 480. And the added plus is, you can shoot 45 Colts in the 454 Casull. JMHO.

Tough question. Whitetail deer don't require either one, so I'd pick the .44 Mag. If I HAD to have one or the other ( just because I HAD to ) I'd probably pick a .454, just because I can make it shoot a wee-bit flatter for 125 yard shots. But don't ask me to choose between the .454 and .475 Linebaugh ( or .480 Ruger) if big game lke buffalo, bison, and bears are to be hunted. The 400 gr.-420 gr. bullrts of the .475's will win every time, and make my decision easy.

I chose the .454, Because I already loaded for the 45 colt, there was a good supply of various weight bullets to choose from including a large supply of cast bullets avaliable.  The .454 could be loaded light for deer with a jacketed XTP that works wonderfully on white tail deer and can be loaded heavy for bigger game.  I like the XTP loaded to 1250 fps. It's a mild 454 load without too much recoil and is accurate and deadly. shooting 45 colts is just a bonus because I have plenty of brass.

For deer either will work fine. The 454 may be a bit overkill. I'd go with the 480 simply because it will be easier to shoot, and might even do a better job. (Ask Graybeard about that! He can explain it really well.) However, I tend to agree with Ken. If deer hunting, a 300-gr bullet out of a .44 will do just fine, and cost a whole lot less to shoot. But between the .480 and the .454, go .480.

That advice and $5 will get you a cup of coffee. (Just don't get Starbucks--they will not ship to our troops.)
