22 jet question
« on: March 02, 2007, 03:51:59 PM »
i have an old h and r 158 that has several barrels one of which is a 22 jet. i hear that it is suppose to use .222 bullets. is it ok to use .224 or .223 bullets with a little less powder.  the .222 are hard to come by.  also saw couple posts back where 45-70 has groove diam. of .454 and knowing bullets are .458. this seems to say that bullets a couple .001's over are ok.  also have seen posts of .308 bullest used in .311 bores working but some loss of accuracy and velocity.  thanks in advance for answers from those of you in the know.

You may want to slug the barrel and see what you really have.  Pull a .22 bullet and push it through with a cleaning rod and then measure it and see what you get.  Lots of 22 hornets shoot .224 bullets and seem to be OK.  My hornet factory bullets measure .223.  You will probably get best results using a .223 hornet bullet because they have a lot thinner jackets so they will expand easier.  I don't think a bullet .002 over will do any real damage but that is just my opinion.  Larry

I have a Jet and at first worried about the bore but it's working great with the hornady 35gn vmax and IMR-4227.  I have not slugged the bore but  I believe you are right about using the .224 bullets in a .222 bore...a bit less powder for the same pressure.  I ought to slug mine, just outta curiosity.
