handi barrels

i know i can send my 45/70 off and have a different barrel put on it but can i swap em out myself at home if i want to use the other barrel?

Yes.  At the factory, they will adjust the new barrel to match your receiver.  Switching between barrels should not affect this adjustment, so you can choose any of your barrels to shoot, depending on your mood or your purpose of the day.  That's really what the flexibility of the handi-rifle is all about.

No on both counts, unless you count used barrels here or on ebay which can be done. H&R will only sell a barrel when they fit it to your frame, they or no one else sells new barrels. They also won't normally fit a used barrel.

Tim and members here, just as an aside and point of information, just within the last few weeks I had conversation with a member here that told me after contacting H&R/NEF CS they told him for a $15 fee (plus the $10 shipping I would think) they would try to fit a used barrel he had urchased to his reciever, they told him if they could not fit it safely they would return the barrel with the $15, IIRC as it was they were successful in fitting the barrel for him. I was a bit shocked they did it and  spoke to him about it further, he told me he got them impression after talking to them that it was a service they offered on a regular basis...for what it's worth anyway. I do know that things are apt to change quickly but this was told to me in person about 2-3 weeks ago. I do not know if he sent the reciever and old barrel in while a new barrel was being fitted or just for the barrel fitting alone....<><.... :)

They also offered that service to me.  I ended up selling the barrels instead.  Gordon said there was a 50-50 chance they could get a used barrel to fit.  I'm thinking they won't do it if it needs to be shimmed.

MSP, that's why I said "normally", there have been exceptions as you were told, but no one has actually reported having it done yet that I'm aware of. They could cut the pivot in the underlug a touch deeper to allow one to fit, but they couldn't do anything to make one fit that locks up loose, as in one that we would shim, they would have to fit a new barrel.

Quick, I just got an e-mail from that member. It was a few weeks ago that I spoke with him and he has recieved his reciever back from H&R with the used (but like new) barrel fitted to his action. I agree with you that there is as much a chance they cannot do it as theat they can do it and I also agree that they would not shim a barrel to make it fit. However just by trying the used barrel in your reciever you shoudl get a pretty good idea if they could do it or not since you should know if the barrel and lug were to long or to short and could not be "factory fitted". Buy the way, the fitted barrel was a .270. So now we know of at least one that has been done by the factory. And krod47nw, thanks for confirming that they offer the service. We now have it from a couple of members that it is possible to have them do it....<><.... :)

Hmmmm, I wonder if they would fit a barrel that I added the reinforcement to?? I'll have to check that out if my barrel fitting jig doesn't work out. I'm headed to the range tomorrow with .500 S&W and .300 WSM barrels that have been beefed up, I'll know then and report my findings. ;)

It shouldn't be done, but this one was done by Handi35 and it shot the underlug loose in less than 100 rounds, didn't hurt the frame tho. He sold the barrel to Mac for the cost of shipping, then I bought it from Mac. Mac got some load data from Johann at Accurate Arms for Magpro powder that will keep the pressure within Handi capabilities which may produce .30-06AI velocities with 150gr bullets. I beefed the underlug up (see the Barrel fitting> Underlug Improvement in the FAQs) and am headed to the range tomorrow to see how well it works.

Good luck at the range Quick and let us know how everything works out. I don't think H&R will fit barrels that have been changed or altered from the factory setup but it might be worth a call....<>.... :)

There wouldn't be any change other than the void in the underlug being filled and the forward roll pin replaced with a larger solid pin, maybe it will give them some ideas and they'll say.... "Hmmmm, maybe this would be a good idea for us to do!!"!!!
