What determines proper length of pull for a skeet gun????
« on: March 04, 2007, 03:11:22 AM »
How do you guys determine what is the proper lenght of pull for you ? I have two browning sporting models that are 14 3/4" and my rem 11-87 is 14 1/4"
I shoot skeet for the most part and seem to swing the reminton a little better I am thinking of cutting the brownings to match ???

There are a LOT of ways folks attempt to determine proper stock length, MOST ARE WRONG.

Some will tell you to put it in the crook of the elbow but that's about as useless a way as I've ever come across to be honest.

The way I do it is to mount the gun and see where my right thumb falls in relationship to my nose when my head is on the stock. You don't want it too close or the thumb will hit your nose when you fire and you don't want it too far away as that's too long a stock. But then eventually you should just know what is right for you. For me that's 14" to 14.25" really and anything shorter or longer leads to problems. It sounds like you need about the same. I can get by OK especially on skeet where you premount the gun with 14-3/8" but that's getting long for me.

Another consideration is time of year. In winter when you're wearing lots of layers you need shorter than in summer with just a t-shirt. It matters.

For a more dynamic game where you must mount the gun after seeing the target as sporting clays USED to be or live bird shooting you must have one that quickly comes to shoulder without catching on the clothes. This is compounded by much hunting done in colder weather with heavier clothes and can require a shorter stock as well.

I shoot skeet and sporting from low gun. To decide LOP I shoulder the gun with my eyes closed while dressed as I would be when shooting. I expect the gun to be mounted with everything lined up when I open my eyes. If not then I figure out what needs changed to do that. The dynamics of the gun can change the needed LOP. My Guns range from 14 1/4" to 14 5/8" on the ones I shoot targets with. For the hunting guns 13 3/4" works best because I won't always have my feet set right when game shows up. 13 3/4" works best for the hunting rifles also. Everyones different, you need to experiment on yourself with different LOP's. My BT99 trapgun is 15 1/4" because it's pre-mounted, and I tend to prefer longer LOPs.

thanks for the replies guys. I was hoping there was amore definative standard for this. Kind of like archery where my draw lenght is 27" perhaps since I do have a short draw lenght with the bow it might stand to reason that I seem to do better with shotguns cut between 14" to 14 1/4" it just seems`that I have better follow through with the shorter  lenght
By the way Bill I too have been told that the old measuring stick of from the crook in the elbow to the trigger finger was a crock but it does seem to be where I am most comfortable

By the way do you guys do archery and if so what are your draw lenghts?

That old crook of the arm trick might work for you but not for others. It's just not dependable. My bow draw length is 28". I'm 5' 8" and weight 250.
