Hunting Camp still lives
« on: March 04, 2007, 07:41:17 AM »
Last fall there was a hunting camp topic.  For a lot of seasons camp life has been a major part of my fall hunting.  And there has been a few times I have retreated off the mountain because of nasty weather.  When the wind blows all night, the tempature takes a big drop, the snow falls I start keeping track of the all the events because if something serious happens it maybe to late to leave.  A couple of nights with 50 mph winds, and drops in tempature my old tent starts looking rather thin.  And the sound of old 200 foot tall snags getting blown over makes me nervous.  But I knew it was going to be a rough night when the dog wanted to sleep in the tent.  He found a corner and did not budge.  Normally the dog slept outside in below freezing tempatures.

But as long as the weather is half way decent I enjoy my nights on the mountain.

You know one of the things that keeps the spirits up in camp is having a little game around, even if you are not going to shoot it.

I had a limb fall just behind me this weekend........with the pine beetle problem we've got plenty of dead trees just waiting to be blown over.....

What a beautiful picture........looks like a fine spot!

Looks like the deer like it too?

Is that what you call "baiting"? :D

I warned my brother about those does after they paid us a late afternoon visit.  I told him to be sure and secure his gear and food because those does would be looking to get into it.

The camp is on a high ridge top, so when something woke me during the night it was brighter then daylight outside my tent. There was a full moon high in the sky.  All was quite over at my brother’s tent, and our other partner’s tent.  But in the center area two does were dancing around.  Each twirled around with the end of a deer bag in it's mouth.  I named it the dance of the Seven Veils.  Another two or three does were hanging on the edge looking on.  After a few minutes of watching I went back to bed.  The next morning the deer bag looked well chewed/gummed.  I think the deer like the sizing in the material.

Funny my brother secured things after that.

I hang a plastic tarp about two feet over my tent in a "V" to shed rain and snow.  It might slow a small limb down, and absorbed most of the energy.  They do not call the Widow Makers for nothing.
