OK, what's this about? A new Glock .45 Caliber?
« on: May 12, 2003, 01:46:59 AM »
I have heard several folks mention there was a new Glock .45 cartridge in the making - a shortened .45 auto - there is already a cartridge from Mexico that fills that slot.

I don't know.  I heard the rumor too, a while ago.  I didn't know it had gotten as far as cartridge production.   If this is true this may be the first big marketing blunder Glock has made...45 acp is a major institution in the US, not one to be tampered with, in my opinion...  The 45 acp became that length for feed angle, case tension, and extraction and ejection reliability reasons, but I'm not an engineer.
Better they would go with 50 Action Express or a 50 acp-type combat caliber, in a 7 shot ported configuration.  I know I am harping all the time about shot placement, but if you are dealing with 1/2 inch frontal surface area coupled with say 950 feet per second, that would come pretty close to "one shot stops",  My two cents. :D

I would be afraid to buy one. I don't reload and think it might go the way of the 41 action express cartridge-obsolete.  The old 45 acp will be around and fairly inexpensive way after I'm gone.

As Jeff Cooper would say: "Looks like a solution to a nonexistant problem". Wonder if Glock got caught up in the "shorter is better" craze that's going around in rifle cartridges these days? The .45ACP is not exactly a magnum as it is. I fail to see any advantage in reducing the powder capacity of the existing case. I would be surprised if a market exists for this round!

I thought the same thing as savage when I read about the 45 Glock round in a magazine.
What practical purpose could it possibly have? You will be paying top dollar for ammo that will be hard to find and expensive to shoot.

45ACP ammo is cheap and plentiful and 40S&W is not bad either and both will probably do a better job than the new round.

Some fool will rush out to be the first to have one. I would almost bet that new round will not survive!

:D Afternoon guys.  I have heard the hype also, and had a chance to ask some questions about the new round.  I have not talked to anyone down in Smyrna ,as of yet.  But.  My information is that this new .45 round is going to be a go-fasty...meaning lotsa speed to it,with the same breech pressures of the .45 ACP or a bit higher.  Now....this info may,or may not be true, but it may spark some interest someplace.   stay safe...King

King,
I heard the same thing. A 150-165 around teen velocity. What concerns me is the already low BC of the 45 round becomes even lower with the shorter bullets required in the lighter weights. Seems to me the (God Forbid) 40 S&W might be more efficient in that bullet weight.

:D SAVAGE     I know what you are talking about with the lighter projos.  In my studies a few(dont ask) years ago I found the same things.  Drive em too fast and they become unstable,a short, fat round can do some really strange things.  Also tht low bc(.45), is,correctly going to be lower, with that projectile. I agree with you on the .40 projo also.  In my inquiries in ref to this I have been told that it is going to make an impact(been there done that) on the handgun market.  Now,you and I have been around a little while and that can have two meanings, one a plus and the other a minus.  I have also been told not to second quess what is going on with this round until it comes out and the studies are shown. (it is possible they have a new projo design) It is going to be interesting.  I have not been near the computer much in the last couple of weeks(springtime ) due to the amount of "orphaned" animals I have been bottle feeding.  Got a fawn and coyote sleeping together at the moment, and the bottle is due on the fawn.  Right now it is not to bad(only about 10 on the bottle)  Stay safe.......King.   I need a new toy

King,
It all comes down to marketing. That's what will make or break this cartridge. If they can convince enough people of the advantages of this round (real or imagined) it will sell. That's the beauty of this field, things are happening to keep interest peaked, and that's a good thing. Still, I will wait to see how they get around the laws of physics as they relate to external ballistics. My hats off to you ---bottle feeding that many animals. That tells me a lot about a man's character. You can play on my team anytime brother!

Yep, looks like Glock is caught up in the "shorter is better" craze! I just read some performance specs on the cartridge that give 1042fps on the 185gr and 942fps for the 200gr. So while performance didn't suffer, it's pretty much a sure bet there is a operating pressure increase tradeoff!
Glock says this will give the mdl 37 the same grip dimensions as the mdl 22. Well there may be a market out there for a .45 with .40 performance in the same size grip frame, but not in this house! Yep, Jeff was right, once again a nonproblem has been solved!!!

I thought they finally did it. A regular sized .45, but no, they had to go and screw it up. Why couldn't they just leave well enough alone and make a full sized single stack mag in .45 ACP? The stupid new ammo is cost out the wazoos, and some of us like our 230-gr. hollowpoints. I'm not gonna trade away my Hydra-Shoks or Gold Dots. This thing will only have 185 and 200-gr. bullets, and from the reports, the 185 is the only one to really have. S&W did it with the P99; Ruger did it with the P-97; heck, even Glock did it with the G30 and 36. What lame brain came up with this idea? I guess I'll keep carrying my big fat G21 and keep wishing for something smaller with a full sized grip. May have to break down and buy that S&W P99 after all.

Gaston, ya screwed up big time.
