NEF Sidekick...Question One...bullet mould?
« on: March 05, 2007, 03:20:52 PM »
Hey Guys,

I'm in the process of acquiring one of these nice little rifles, and have a question about a "conical" bullet for it.  It's a 50 cal, with a 1:28 twist barrel.....I'm looking at the Lee Improved Minie, Traditional Design and Modern Minie, Target Design (you can check their website).  These would seem to be in the right weight bracket for the twist rate.   Anyone have experience with this combination???

Do you have a favorite full caliber "conical" of a different design for this barrel twist ??

Thanks guys!!

My favorite conical is the great plains bullet in 385 grains and my other is TC maxi hunter. You can buy   a TC maxiball mold but i didnt  have any luck with those on animals. There are also some bullets made by remington in a little plastic green box that shoot excellent and perform great but i do not know what they are called. Havnt shot them in years due to the stores never restocking anything.

The No Excuses 460 grain .503" diameter or Bullshop 460 grain Nex in .503" diameter.

80 grains 777 FFFG, fiber gasket wad, and either one of those two bullets. :)

I'd buy a box of the 350 gr T/C maxi hunter bulllets. IF they shoot well for you then get the Maxi hunter mold.

I have the maxi hunter mold, shoot a 333gr cast bullet out of my 50 cals. They are accurate and I managed to take this....

Nice buck blammer.

Im betting your rifle has a MUCH slower twist than 1:28". The Sidekick/Huntsman likes a bullet in the 430-460 grain range. Mine don't even like 400 grainers, too light. Every rifle is an individual though, so you never know what you are going to get. With reduced loads, you might get the 350's to fly, but I doubt very well. Those 460's with 70 to 80 grains of 777, will go around 1.5" with peep/fire-sight, all day without swabbing between shots. :)

my rifle has a 1/48 twist

I think I got the mold from T/C themselves, many a moon ago.

I shoot 80 gr FFG out of my Lyman.
