Barrel fitting , kinda odd
« on: March 05, 2007, 09:33:31 PM »
I have been playing musical barrels the last day or two and have discovered something , all the barrels that came off of 04 frames fit all of my 04 frames  , the same is true for my 02 barrels and 02 frames .

As for my 99 and 01 frames , the only barrels that i have found to fit are the ones that came on the rifles . case in point  , the 30/30 barrel i just got from down south is a perfect fit to the 243 frame that i got here in Ohio , both are 02's and the 22-250 that i got from Mama for CHRISTmas will fit the 223 frame that i got over 2 years ago , both are 04's .

Has anyone else found this to be true with their rifles , just wondering .  ???

Stimptlu32, How are you determining the year of manufacture of barrels you have purchased 2nd hand?

I think what Stimp is saying is that if a barrel either comes on an '04 frame (or '02, '03 etc) or fits an '04 frame it will have a better than average chance of fitting another or perhaps even all '04 frames (or '02, '03 etc). It appears more often than not than barrel fit might be year specific. There has been some mention of this in the past Stimp, but just in passing. You are the first I know of to speak of it in particular. It does seem to happen more often than not but I am unsure yet if there is any signifigance to what you and others, myself included, have seen as a trend. Also as Brett said it is difficult to ascertain what year of manufacture a second hand barrel is. Just recently I needed an ejector so I contacted a memebr here I got a barrel from and he was able to tell me the serial number of the reciever the barrel cam on new. Perhaps in the future it would be nice to know what year the barrel is if that is possible to obtain. However with all the barrel buying, selling, and trading that goes on here that info is lost on quite a few of them. We can however still buy tham and try them on our recievers and fit them if we have to but this is good info if it continues to follow though and something for us to watch. Thanks for your observations Stimpy....<><.... :)

It would be a good idea if the members who have many guns and barrels like Stimpy did the same thing. This way we could find out if there is any truth to this logic. This is very intresting. :o

Brett

In most cases i just ask the seller what year frame it came off , as for my 30/30 barrel , it came from a parted out rifle were i got the barrel , Msp Ret. got the frame and someone else got the stocks , the seller listed the year when he put the rifle up forsale .

I have a 22" 45/70 barrel that i am not sure what year that it was from but the guy i got from had it fitted to a 04 frame and it fit all of my 04 frames just fine .

For what its worth , i am going to start keeping a log of barrels and frames to see if there is any value to this  .

I have nothing but complete guns so I am not much help.

The concept does not seem that far fetched, I'd imagine that the frames are made in batches. and you would think that along with regular manufactureing tolerances there would be batch to batch variance with the tooling getting rebuilt or just re-setup.

Even if you have complete guns if you have some of the same year receivers you can swap barrels to see if they fit each other.
