Rossi Muzzleloader powder question
« on: March 06, 2007, 02:27:09 AM »
I am thinking of buying a muzzleloader, my choices are the Rossi or the NEF.
Question is in the Rossi manual it states to use only pyrodex powder, does any one know why they suggest this and would it be safe to use T777 or Black mag3 in the short or long term use.

Also The Rossi has a 23'' barrel with a 1;24 twist to Nef's 26''barrel 1:28 twist, any commets as to which may preform better.

I do not know why they would say that. I would say get the nef the rate of twist in the rossi is less spinning the bullet and decreasing accuracy.  The longer barrel in the nef would make it more accurate. and you can use 777. the rossi quaily has went down big time

Any of the black powder substatutes will work fine, they are all designed to be the equal of real black powder.  A 23 inch barrel is a little short for a black powder rifle, but so is 26 inches, so I don't think you will notice much difference.  Barrel length won't affect the accuracy, it will give you a little less velocity, but three inches will probably not be noticable unless you are pushing the range limits.  Pay close attention to the ML rules in your state, in some cases a NEF may not be legal, or even a Rossi, just depends on how the rules are written, here in WA state shotgun primers are not legal.  I would take a look at both and probably buy by price, they are very simular rifles and you will not put enough rounds down a Muzzel Loader to wear it out.  The faster twist (Rossi) will let you shoot longer (heavier) bullets, while the NEF may hold a little advantage if you are shooting round balls, although even their slower twist is fast for round balls.  I have an older H&R (NEF) huntsman in 58 cal, it has a very slow twist and really will only shoot the round balls well, but they are 275gr so it doesn't matter.  Buy one, the price is right, you can shoot it and won't be out a ton of money if you change your mind.  Larry
