Good bye
« on: March 06, 2007, 09:51:16 AM »
:'(  Ladies and Gentlemen this has been a very nice place to share our thoughts and ideas together, but my time has just passed me by. I was told by my Doc's that my shooting days areover. Everytime i have shot I get bad headaches from it. I suffered several concussions while playing sports and it relates to that. My brain just doesn't like being jolted by a rifle or shotgun anymore and have decieded along with my wife and doc's to give the shooting sports up. So I have sold all my rifles ect and have quit the sport. One which I have done for the past 40+ years, but all good things must end and that day is today for me. Best wishes to you all and my God give untold joy and peace,  God Bless, Jess :)

I'm sorry to hear that Jess, I hope it's not going to be a continued heath issue even after not shooting anymore, that sounds real serious. You can't even shoot rimfire or light recoil centerfire?? Wear a protective helmet or some such??  :-\

Hope you find something that gives you the same excitment that shooting gave you. I think if i had to stop shooting i would work hard in the reloading department maybe even start selling my reloads to pay for the parts. Hope the best for you and your family GOD bless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just as the cycle of life. I am sorry to hear about your health issuses. I hope you can find a way to shoot low recoil firearms or take up some of the options that the other members have pointed out. I know for me when I go to the range and I punch holes in paper that are sub moa I feel pretty good. My wife will never understand this though. I bring home targets to show her and she is like ok could not really care less. But those of us that shoot do feel good about a good day at the range. To place that shot just where you want is priceless. The funny thing is (NOT REALLY FUNNY THOUGH) on the same page as this post some has posted just starting out. Just as a baby is born and someone dies this is the cycle of life. This person is just starting his Handi adventure and another is ending his. :( MSP RET has said he will always have a place here and that is true. If you do really hang it up we will allways value your input. That is just my 2 cents on this.
The quality of a mans life is in direct proportion to his commitment to excellence.

A bad day at the range is better than a good day at work!!

Jess, Sorry to hear about your health issues. Like others have said just because you can no longer shoot firearms doesn't mean you have to quit the forum.  Also, like some of the others have suggested why not look into an air rifle or even air pistol for your shooting fix.  Air guns are cheap to feed and you can set up a range in your back yard or even in your garage or basement.

Guys my health is fine it's the snap of the rifle that is the problem. I think I'll eventually go to a 243 or 25-06 or even 260 put a break on it and give it a try. The big boys aren't going to happen. I do shoot abow and really do enjoy that. I play golf at a 4 handiap and really my first love sporting wise. Your response is heart felt and taken to heart. Thanks from the bottom of my heart. I'll stick around and when i get a few pennies Ahead i'll pick up a 223 and then one of the rifles I just mentioned. It sucks becuse Elk may be out of the question now. God Bless, Jess

Jess,I am not sure about this, but when I used dynamite on rocks in excavations, you could get some really bad headaches for the nitro fumes in the charge's.They also use Nitroglyceren to trigger headaches in Clusterheads study's. It does'nt affect everyone, but the powder burning in you ammo might be part of the problem. How long do the headaches last, and how severe are they?
The reason I ask is because I have these clusterheadaches myself sometimes and they are really bad news.   Digger

I'll second the archery suggestion. Very satisfying sport and you don't need to shoot heavy draw weights to get great speeds and accuracy.

So long, hate to see you leave the brotherhood, but that's as good a reason as one can have.  Don't think a 22 rimfire would be a problem, still lots of plinking fun.

Either way, enjoy.

Jess, is it the noise/muzzle blast or the recoil that bothers you? If it's the noise, a brake is going to be much worse. :(

Tim it's the snap of the recoil I wear muffs and good ones at all times. I won't brake a 243 or 223 only if i decided to hunt elk again and that will lkiely be a 270Win or 7mm-08. Jess

Sounds like a .270 Ultracomp with a C&H mercury recoil reducer, neoprene shell holder on the comb to prevent any shock to your face and a limbsaver recoil pad would be just the ticket. ;)

Jess, Glad you've decided to stick around.  Our family is kind of like the Gambino family, the only way you are allowed to leave is feet first.  ;) :D   I'm a newbie to golf myself, this will be my second season of playing. Stop by the golf forum I'm adding a link to.  Maybe you could give us some tips.

Jess ...

I also had a four handicap several years ago when shoulder surgery forced me to give up a game I really enjoyed and could relax playing. I turned my interests more to firearms and then into reloading. For me, reloading is something that is challenging, tedious at times, very rewarding, and relaxing all rolled in to one package. In the past 16 months, I have had 3 more surgeries (none life threatening) on my right hand and back. It was an easy decision after shooting the .300wsm Win with a brake installed that I would not be able to continue the higher recoil calibers. This is why I do not have a Handi 45/70. Through trial and error, I found that I can manage recoil in the 7mm-08 but that was the maximum.

I guess the point of all this (and I know you full well know it) is that there are plenty of interests still available to you concerning firearms. If you do not reload, please try it ... you will love it. If you already reload, reload for family and maybe some good friends so they can maximize their rifles/handgun's potential. Maybe you could do a few trigger jobs for other people.

Again, good luck in whatever path you take ... you will still have your friends here.

I have some friends who are not able to shoot much anymore, but they now take tremendous pride in coaching our junior program.   Please give this a thought.  Its a great way to stay involved while helping some very fine young people.
