I have had a bunch of the Handi Rifles. Still do. I have only had problems with the 243. I have had two of them. Niether would eject the empty cases worth a crap. All the rest have been well worth the cost and more. I like the ones that use rimmed casings best. I have four 45-70 NEF including the BC. Find there load and they will shoot along side any 45-70 out there. If I need one for extreme strength, it the Ruger NO.l no question.
shot placement is everything.

My 45-70 barrel on my handi works very well for me. It shoots .5 inch 3 shot groups at 50 yards if I can handle it off the bench. I have not had ejection problems at all. I'm happy with my cheep gun. BTW where do I VOTE?

Now, I'm curious. Is the 1895(read 336)Marlin the ONLY levergun that qualifies? I think not. The 1886 Winchester is superior, hands down.
In fact, it is in a class by itself, being the strongest traditional, tubular magazine, lever action rifle available.

I get my kicks from an 1886.

I had to vote for "other" because you only specified Marlin in the levergun category.  Of my four 45-70s, my favorite is my USRAC 1886 Ultra-lightweight.  It shoulders quickly, digests powerful handloads and isn't much bigger than a 30-30.  I also have 2 Remington rolling blocks and a Siamese Mauser bolt action.

1. T/C TCR
2. Ruger #1
3. T/C contender (super 16 barrel with composite buttstock and forearm)

One through three in the order I would buy them if all three where in front of me.  Had to sell my gun collection in Dec. to help out my folks The first one of these I come accross at a gunshop is coming home

Let's see.....hmmm, I have 9 .45-70's and if I could only pick one it would have to be:

#1. '86 Win or Browning(this one actually has better fit and finish than my original), but it has to be the 26" or 28" barrel. I can use it for more things.

After that:

Most accurate: Uberti '85 High Wall Deluxe clone w/heavy barrrel
Most fun:        Any one of my original Trapdoors (rifle, cadet, officers, and two carbines)
Most nostalgic: Sharps '74 w/34" half octagon; half round barrel

Used to have a Marlin, but was totally unreliable accuracy wise with my heavy, slow loads. Gave it to a friend, think he still has it.

I have to vote for the lever gun.  My Marlin 1895 is a joy to carry and shoot.  One of the first (336) # 000860 I purchased in 1972.  My Winchester 1886 is my all time favorite though.

My favorite and the only one I have is the Ruger # 1. 8)  I'm hoping to get a Marlin Cowboy in 45-70 someday.

Right now it would be my Buffalo Classic but that will change I think I acquired a Sharps in 45/70 and a 1867 45/70 rolling block but haven't had a chance to shoot them yet as they were incomplete and require some smithing.

I'm not sure I'm really qualified to vote on this so I guess it's just as well I didn't.
I've fired a Marlin 1895 before and that was a blast but my intention is to build one of these:

It's a 45-70 custom rifle built on a Greener Martini action.
I have a Martini Henry MkII action waiting for a similar rebuild, although mine will probably be chambered to 45-90 rather than 45-70.
And it'll look a little more like this:

The first is a S.W.Silvers 577/450 Martini Henry trade rifle which belongs to a good friend.
The other is a Thomas Barnesly & Co. 577/450 Martini Henry sporting rifle.
I prefer the smoother traditional stock and straight lever.
But to return to the point, I guess I'll be more qualified to give a proper opinion when the project is finished. :-\

My 45/70 is the only Handi I haven’t got rid of and it is good little gun.  That being that it is my Marlin 1895 that goes deer hunting with me.  With a Marlin load of RE#7 and a Rem 300 HP bullet I can touch bullet holes at 50 yard nearly every time.  Can’t quite do that with the Handi.

I have a Marlin 1895SS in 45/70,a new extractor Handi in 45/70 and just sold a Buffalo Classic. The Marlin is the best of what I have owned in my opinion.
Considering what coyotejoe said i will have to add that he is is honest and spot on with his ascessment of Handis. They are what they are and you must accept them for that.Having been "eaten up" with Handis before I now only own one in 45/70 and if it wasn't for the caliber I probably wouldn't have it.

Stan, how is good is the Buffalo Classic?
Is it a decent rifle and reasonably accurate in spite of the price or finish?

Kombi,When you get a good load worked up for the Buffalo Classic with which you shoot comfortably and get the rifle's sights adjusted to that particular load then you will be able to pop a tennis ball every shot at 100 yards.Golf balls about two out of three shots.Yes,they are that good.BUT....there are other rifles with equal accuracy and some better features. You just gotta look at them realistically. The really going two features of a BC are their sights and the long sight radius barrel.

The BC  can be every bit as accurate as the shooter/sights can be, I shot the top target with my scoped BC at 100yds, the bottom with my 45-120 BC using the Williams FP sight and 525gr Piledriver, the high hit was my sighter, the other two for score after a sight adjustment, was doing load work and decided to try a few at 200yd instead of 100yds. :D

That's pretty impressive.
What sort of velocities are you getting with the 45-70?

~2025fps with that load. Using the 350gr Speer and 45gr of IMR4198, velocity was 2082fps. A couple members have pushed 300gr bullets well over 2500fps in their BCs, NFG's post is below, IIRC, mattparliament was the other.

Recoil isn't bad with a Galco leather recoil pad, the better part of 2lbs of lead or a 1lb mercury recoil reducer in the stock, and me wearing a Past Magnum shoulder pad!! ;)

I have had several Marlins, one was a guide gun, two different Siamese Mausers, one I took an elk with, one original Springfield trapdoor, and a few others, all in 45-70.  But the one that I have kept, after selling all others was my 1874 Sharps.  Now there is a rifle.  It shoots very accurately and has very little recoil.  Of course, I only shoot black powder and the rifle weighs a little over 14 pounds.

I was late getting into Black Powder Cartridge Rifles and truly regret missing so many good times.  If you get a chance, give one a try sometime.  You have to learn a different type of reloading, bullet casting with softer bullets, the art of black powder lube (which is different from hard cast bullet lube), and possibly paper patching bullets.  It can be frustrating and very rewarding, truly something not to miss in a lifetime.
