.454 load??
« on: March 06, 2007, 05:34:32 PM »
just started reloading for my .454 Encore. Just wondering what loads you guys have found to work well...I was thinking about going with either IMR or Winchester powder along with a Hornady 240 gr. XTP/MAG...the problem with my encore is that it has a closed breach and only a 10' barrel. I'm trying to get a good balance of something with a good punch without breaking my fingers. any thoughts?

I've got one for my Encore with a 12" barrel.  I started with cast bullets and have stayed there, with the exception of the 300 gr. XTP/MAG and 300 gr. Speers.  I have many cast loads that have worked well.  I would guess that if you want a plinking load of sorts that around 8-12 gr. or Unique would work well for your purposes, mine is a 255 gr. cast Keith and 10 gr. of Unique, it's a pussycat.  If you want further load data, I'd be more comfortable if you PM'd me.  Not that mine's dangerous, but I don't like posting unpublished data, especially for Encores in popular revolver calibers.

I've found that my .454 casull likes 15gr of unique and a 250 gr XTP (NOT THE MAG XTP) very deadly on deer and accurate in my gun, also mild to shoot.  This gun also likes WW296 powders with full power loads, but not the max loads of WW296.
