Hard Primers for an M-1
« on: March 07, 2007, 03:31:45 PM »
I recently started reloading for an M-1 Garand---I have been using Winchester primers--I got a slam fire--I forgot the M-1s have a floating firing pin.--A shooter at the range suggested I use CCI #34 large rifle primers a NATO spec primer.---I can't find any in my area.-I found some on the WEB for $24.00 a thousand--so far so good--the bad news is there is a hazmat fee of $20.00 plus the shipping--thats $44.00 plus shipping--OUCH!
I just started using CCI #200 large rifle primers and they are supposed to be harder than Winchester , Federal and Remington. I have shot 60 rds and so far no slam fires.---Anybody with some ideas?

I bought a large quantity of #34 CCI for my M1A to offset the HM fee.

I have a Garand and have great luck with Federal primers.  I have never experienced, or heard of, a slam fire with Federal's.  When reloading for be sure to stay within the chamber pressure envelope for the Garand AND make sure to FULL LENGTH RESIZE.  Don't try to use neck size only.  BTW Small base dies are NOT needed

I'll have to look for some IMR 4065.

I've always used Federal primers in my M1A and M1.  Thus far, I've never had a slam fire in firing thousands of rounds.  Slam fires can occur because of primer sensitivity and/or if the primers aren't seated deeply enough.

Go here: http://www.wideners.com/

CCI34S Military Large Rifle Primers $70.00 per 5000

I suggest you buy 4 boxes of 5000 to off set shiping and hazmat. That's just 20,000, they'll be gone before you know it.

God Bless

CCI 200's have never created a problem with my Garands. Ya got to be careful when loading still, but all seems well with my reloads per the Hornady manual.
