Shooting Firecrackers
« on: March 08, 2007, 01:20:38 PM »
I want to make a cannon that will shoot black cat fire crackers out while lighting the fuse so that (or so i hope) the explode in mid air. I am wondering about the legality of this. I don't want to go to jail just for a little fun this fourth of july. The next step I want to make a .375 inch bore cannon to shoot the .25 inch inside diamiter carbord tubes from cannon fuse .com to make mini rocket rounds. Like I said earlyer I don't want to go to jail for a little fun. Any information would be much apriciated.

This is kind of a gray area.  Exploding projectiles are clearly within the realm of destructive devices.  Thrown firecrackers clearly are not.  You're kind of taking the risk expecting/hoping that no government agent will witness you.  Kind of up to you.  You wouldn't be the first person to do so.

What you are making is more than likely just an arial pyrotechnic device... same thing as you can buy at the fireworks store in many states.

There is a max limit on the bursting charge to be legal. I havn't looked at the pyro sites lately, so I don't recall the numbers. However, if you are launching a firework that you can legally buy in the US, you are more than likley under that legal limit.

For instance, you can not buy M-80's which I believe contained 80 grains of flash powder. If you got caught with one, you would have in your possession a very illegal thing... can't launch it, cant have it. M-50's and smaller are treated differently.

I'm not a lawyer, do not take what I just said as legal advice. Instead, look at the legal warnings on the big pyro sites (skylighter, pyrocreations, Foxfire, etc and see what they are saying. The last time I looked there they gave references to ATF regulations, so check those out too.

Currently, the pyro dealers are going out of their way to give you good advice to help keep you legal, because they are all under legal attack by the Consumer Protection Agency. As a side note, Foxfire is in court with a pending compromise ruling due any day now (overdue in fact) that may affect not only hobby fireworks makers, but cannon shooters as well.

You can launch pyrotechnic devices out of a launcher tube (they call the tubes "mortars" too). There is just a max limit on the payload bursting charge chemical content. Check out the pyro web sites and the ATF references they contain and stay on the safer side of legal.

anybody remember the pre 911 "bird bangers"? they were sweet for keeping birds away.. they "launched" with a 22 blank and lit from the same blank, flew up a bit and went boom.. hard to find nowdays..

they used a 15mm barrel.

I've got most of a box of 50 of the bangers and a box of the screamers. I have the double barrel launcher and a modified flash hider on my 10-22 for launching them.
Thanks for reminding me of them. You've got me to thinking of trying to launch them out of my little bronze howitzer.

when imbeded in a "spud" cannon they make nice anti birdcraft spuds.... mostly makes a cloud of starchy humid air that drifts down.... funny to watch, terrifying on a misfire!.. the reason we used kevlar blower blankets.. after reading here, I am so done with pvc, golf balls for accuracy sounds like more fun.

cncswiss1  - WELCOME to the board!  You're right, it's in a different league.  They're all fun but in different ways.

I assume you have 'some' machining capability ?  Look through the golf ball mortar making contest entries from a few years back and the materials list for the stainless steel.  I have materials for both if you need (for the cost of postage).

sorry for going off topic with the spud thing.. figured it was possibly in bad form..

I have been machining spinal implants for over a decade. so the machining part is no problem, the problem lies in size and materials, I live day in and day out cutting Ti, 316L , and some 17-4..... most of my tool making stuff (materials and machines) are geared for smaller items, I have loads of Ti and A2 tool room material , not much 1018 laying around though.... I'll bug my material supplier. I am used to boring holes in the sub .200 (down to .011) diamter to tenth tolerances. These mortars should be very interesting, but it's hard to ignore the fish out of water feeling.  now to get a big ole 1" bore bar from kennametal.

Hey acoop101, I don't think you will go to jail as where I live fire works are illegal here.  The worst I have encountered is the police telling me to knock it off due to noise after about fifty rounds!  Heres mine
