Need to coon proof my feeder, caught them on film
« on: March 08, 2007, 04:12:10 PM »
I was wondering why I was going through 250 lbs of corn a week. They are using their paws to scoop the corn out of the feeder bowl so they can get corn whenever they want.

Pics were taken by our game camera, cheap one so the pics are not all that great.

Did you put diesel fuel on the corn before you put it in the feeder. I'm told that is supposed to help but I really haven't tried it yet.

What if you isloated that bar they step on and run some juice through it from a 12v battery or something?

I don't know what your paying for corn but I just paid a tad over $4.00 a bushel up here in Minnesota which amounted to exactly $46.43 for 650 pounds.

And apparently it's all due to Ethanol?

The feed mill told me in the long run everyone going to lose if price stays high.

I "acquired" a couple of the old metal milk crates, they are about 18x18x18 inches (gress).  I cut four pieces of pipe hanging strap, (metal with holes about every inches) bent the strap around the the top of the metal frame, centered on each side.  I then used self tapping sheet metal screws to screw it to the bottom of the feeders.  The holes allow the corn (feed) to filter through, but keep the coons out.  To replace batterys or set the clock, just unscrew three of the sheet metal screws,  fold the crate back, letting it hang on the remaining piece of strap, when finished, put it in place, and replace the screws.

If you can't find the metal crates, the plastic will do, but I have "Known" a coon or two that chewed through the plastic to get to the corn source.  A friend had one chew in, and it was sleeping in the crate next to the food source.

:D Haaaa...did the coon wake up to a click sound from the safety being taken off?

Buddy of mine climbed up in his tree stand one time to come face to face eye level with a porcupine that had been chewing critical pieces of wood in his tree stand for the salt?

He tasted lead next   ;)

I wish I could pay what you are paying, Im paying $7 for 50lb bags, I really need to find someplace to buy it in bulk but then I'd have storage problems.

Borrowing from Bearfat's idea, what if you ran a wire (insulated from the frame) around at the level of the spinner. They would have to lean against it to reach the spinner plate.

Got my feeder hanging from a tree.  Coons were climbing the tree, shinning out on a limb, standing on the feeder and shaking the corn out of it.  Got a fence shocker, a 12 volt car battery wire and insulators and ran both the ground and hot wires up the tree and out the limb.   Used PVC on the tree trunk so no one could get zapped.

As of last count we had shocked three coons to death.   How many just got zapped it is hard to tell.  But they leave my hanging feeder alone.
