Stopping barrel leading?

Gents and Madams,

The last few outings my efforts have been towards reducing or eliminating barrel leading.

Caliber of choice is .40-65 in Browning Black Powder Silhouette Model.

Bullet is RCBS, 400 CSA and SPG lube.  Also SAECO 740/SPG.

After reading Croft Barker's book on Silhouette shooting and loading for same, his praise for Thompson Center's Bore Butter was a quick study.

Tried his method of applying Bore Butter between each squad of silhouette animal fired upon.  Maintaining a clean chamber is difficult and time consuming  while applying the Bore Butter to the bore.

Subsequently the Bore Butter application was revised.  Have resorted to heating the Bore Butter in a small metal cup.  While the Bore Butter is  liquid the loaded round bullet is dipped into same and given a twirl before it starts to harden on the bullet..........  The Bore Butter isn't allowed past the upper most exposed band and doesn't mix with the SPG lube.

Objective was to allow the forward motion of the bullet and with the heat generated cause the Bore Butter to flow rearward (obviously) and in essense coat the barrel.  (Yes the lubed bullets need to be protected from dirt and heat.  A natural occurance in New Mexico wind and weather.)

Leading seems to have been eliminated so far.  Perhaps when south western New Mexico temperatures begin to elevate the leading may reoccur?

BPCR shooting is constant experimentation.  The learning curve never seems to get straight!

You didn't mention what if any wad that you were using. you need a wad between the bullet and powder. I tried the CSA bullet in my 40-65 Pedersoli. I didn't have good luck. I like RCBS molds so I changed to the 400 BPS, which I believe my hero Mike Venturino designed. This bullet has large, deep square grease grooves for a lot of lube. I load about 62grs Goex cartridge with a drop tube, compressed, a .030" fiber wad. Star-line brass, a federal 215 primer. And oh yes lubed with SPG lube. I don't understand what your doing with the Bore Butter? I seat my bullet right in the lands. Also it is very important to use a blow tub to keep fowling soft between shots.
I had about a three year learning curve on this black powder stuff. But I think it is the most fun you can have legally. If you can, try to shoot 200 yds or longer. my rifle is more accurite at 200 or 300 yards than 100. The range we shoot at, we can shoot 550 yds. I haven't been able to shoot any matches because of church on sundays. I hope this helps
