30/30 range report
« on: March 09, 2007, 06:35:03 AM »
Got to shoot this morning , god its nice out  ;D,

Things did not go as well as i hoped though , first round was 14" high and 10" left not a good way to start with a bore sighted rifle @ 50 yards no less . Things did get better as i dialed in the scope .

First groups were 150 gr Hornady RNs and they were in the 2 1/2" area , the next batch were 170 gr Speers and they were in the 3" range , these were shot @100 yards . the 3rd batch were the Speer 180 gr Spitzers and the groups shrunk to just under 2" at this point things start to get weird .

The last batch were 90 gr Hornady JHPs that were designed for the 30 Carbine , the first 3 were almost toughing and the next 3 were all over the place , how could this be , well i got to looking and the butt stock bolt had started to work loose . that ended the shooting as i had no tools with me to work with .

All loads were starting loads of H4895 and book COLs for the bullet used , so now its back to the reloading bench and the work bench , as a side note i did have 2 FTF , bad primers as they took 3 hits each and no luck ,

All things considered it was a great day .  ;D

Hey Stimpy. I sounds like it might like the 90's maybe the stock worked loose durning the last three shots. ;D
The quality of a mans life is in direct proportion to his commitment to excellence.

A bad day at the range is better than a good day at work!!

I have had many of the same days you just described. A lot of work put into several loads and the anticipation of finally getting out of the house to shoot something. And then you finally do and the results aren't as hoped for.
Still as I say to everyone I shoot with...I always learn something with every squeeze of the trigger..be it for good or worse. And it applies especially with a different firearm and caliber. But at least you were able to be out there and having some fun squeezing a few off.
Knowing you like you stock selections ;D, what was your 30-30 suited up in?
