What a difference a sight makes!
« on: March 10, 2007, 12:40:19 PM »
Wednesday was regular range day for me.Ever since I got my Buffalo Classic I have been shooting it with the concentric circle front sight insert and with very good results.Last week I was looking thru my little tin of front sight inserts and was contemplating the post insert because I shoot other rifles which have front posts, mainly old milsurp rifles and have become very used to that post on them.Just for grins I thought I'd try the medium height front post insert which I did on Wednesday.Holy big boom Batman!I shot a 1-1/4" inch three shot group at 100 yards.Lying on the ground in front of the 100 yard berm were three tennis balls which my shooting buddy was plinking at.I shot 3 tennis balls in three consecutive shots. The third shot was purposely a hair low cause I was pretty cocky at this point and just plain old giddy with the new found accuracy.Didja ever see how far up in the air a 45/70 will thrown a tennis ball if you hit right under it?I'm guessing about 20 feet.
I was really surprised at the difference the sight picture made in accuracy.Just goes to show that you can't get complacent and have to continually try new stuff.
I let my shooting buddy try the BC and he also commented at how much better it sighted with the post.

The more I listen,the more I hear....and vice versa.

45/70..it's almost a religion.

Get yourself a set of Lee Shaver inserts for the Lyman 17A globe. I have used these in the past on other rifles with great success. They give you a finer front post or cross hairs. You can find them for about $15 if you shop around. ;)

I'll second the Lee Shaver insert set, the Lyman set leaves a lot to be desired IMO.
