Opinions wanted on rimfire choice
« on: March 10, 2007, 08:48:57 PM »
Hi guys
i have a savage .17 HMR stainless/synthetic which cost me peanuts, quite accurate but not my gun of choice(very poor trigger even after working it,flexi stock, agricultural magazine fit/action) and has started to have problems with extraction....now i really like the caliber and want to trade up in rifle quality

i am considering the anschutz 64 MPR,the ruger and the cz.....all roughly the same price over here(australia)

i really like the 9 shot rotary mag in the ruger, the trigger is poor but i am assured it is fixable, the gunsmiths admit they like rugers because they are the most reliable and IF you need parts they are cheap and readily available(most professional kangaroo shooter use rugers over here),the bolt feels very sloppy in fact the bolt on my house gate feels more precise :o,they have a reputation for accuracy(see not re professional shooters),american stock shape not my first choice

the anschutz should be a quality, accurate gun but they only have a 4 shot magazine!,i beleive the triggers are excellent as is the firing pin/lock time, the stock on the MPR looks a little unusual but distinctive....i haven't held this rifle as it's special order over here

i have owned a brno rifle(hornet) and it was very accurate with a good trigger,i am told the newer CZ's are not the same quality, poor woodpoor quality control as ,parts made in several different factories?, parts are expensive and slow in australia,5 shot mag acceptable, american stock shape not my first choice

i will be using the rifle for small game hunting(rabbits, foxes, feral cats, etc) not benchrest but want it to be accurate as the .17 is not very forgiving on shot placement when shooting rabbits for the table ::) and some shots under the spotlight are 175m

any advice or experience welcomed
cheers

Hey there aussie,

Not sure what price level you are looking at, but I have a Clark Custom, Ruget 77/22 which is a fine rifle.

Clark takes a new rifle or your personal Ruger and "tricks it out" with a Walther barrel and trigger work.

The price here was in the mid 7s. That was a couple years back, so not sure what they go for now.

I wanted a good shooter, and looked at Kimbers and Coopers until I found and handled the Clark Coustom.  The price was good, I got myne for 600, the trigger was good and it shoots VERY well.

PLUS, I really like the 10 shot rotory mag.of the Ruger.

Some folk have "stock" Rugers which shoot very well right out of the box or with some slight trigger work.

Good luck!

Keep em coming!

Over here the CZ 452 has a good following.  The trigger is questionable on some, but there is a good fix for that problem.

thanks for that
no doubt there are some rugers....and other factory rifles....that shoot very well out of the box,but what are the odds I get one ::)
there are some posts here and on rimfire central that say there ruger .17hmr shot very poorly and needed quite a bit of money to fix it,hardly any posts say the same about the CZ or anschutz(annie...gotta love that nickname) although some do rag the trigger on the 452 as you rightly point out
keep em coming guys
cheers

Aussie

I don't know how available they are in your local, but I highly recommend you check out the CZ's.  I used to have an Anschutz 1416D, but now have a new CZ 453 with the single set trigger.  The Anschutz, as should be expected, was extremely accurate; however, my new CZ 453 is every bit as accurate as that Anschutz and for a lot less money and I am totally satisfied with the materials and workmanship.  My pics of my rifle on Photobucket don't seem to be working for some reason, but here is a pic of a target shot with the very first 50 rounds shot out of this rifle.  The white circles are 1/2" in diameter.

By the way, CZ rimfires are offered in more stock styles than the "American".  You can check them out here: http://www.cz-usa.com/products_rimfire_rifles.php?m=1

I don't know if they ship to Australia, but Whittakerr Guns http://www.whittakerguns.com/ usually has a good selection and good prices.
