PH .280 Remington
« on: March 11, 2007, 05:15:01 AM »
I've just acquired the Pro Hunter in .280 Remington.  Don't know much about this cal accept for what I've read.  Anybody shooting it, reloading for it?  If so, give me your thoughts.....

I just got one a couple weeks ago.  Love it, but haven't got it sighted in yet.  Still lots of snow on my shooting bench (picnic table).
I have some 140 grain Remington Core Lokt's loaded with 52 grains of IMR 4350 and Rem 9 1/2 primers.  All I've done with it so far is to check for signs of high pressure.
I mounted a Nikon Pro Staff 3-9X40 scope on it and bore sighted it.

I bought a regular .280 barrel last year.  as you know, on paper it is a great round. I haven't really gotten serious about trying different bullets, grouping etc. but after about 50 rounds it is plenty accurate to kill a deer. I'm shooting the 140 grain ballistic silver tips. The only shot I made last year was a head shot on a doe @ 75 yds so I have no proof of bullet performance. My buddy has two .280 bolt rifles and has killed about 10 deer with them. All one shot, all fell within sight. Also the recoil is very tolerable in my regular encore. You should be really happy with this cal. in the PH.

I've got the exact setup and shoot federal fusion 140 grain ammo.  The round is very accurate and got 3 one shot kills (whitetail) last year.

Here is .280 PH shooting 139 gr. SST's IMR 4350 (1" MOA). Love the balance and point of rifle. The pic is from deer reduction hunt April 15th this year. Biggest dressed 207. All went down hard one shot kills. Extremely pleased with .280 performance and am working up 160 gr. laod with IMR 7828.

I have a 280 JDJ barrel.   Mine is a 22" Shilen barrel.   I get 3100fps with 66gr of RL-22 and a 140 gr Nosler Accubond.   3020 fps w/ a 160 Accubond and 64 gr RL-22.  Both loads shoot 1/2" (less if I do a better job of holding the rifle).
THESE LOADS ARE FOR A JDJ CHAMBER ONLY.  NOT A 280 REM CHAMBER.
Even so you won't be disappointed with the 280 Rem chamber.

P.S. I have a 26" SSK barrel in 270 JDJ #2  that is for sale.

I had one for a short while. With Re-22 and the 140 grain Accubond, I was able to safely reach 3150 fps from the 28" barrel. Accuracy with that particular load averaged a little better than 3/4" at 100 yards.

Very good! I have thought of getting a Pro Hunter in 7-08 & rechambering to 280AI. Should do well.
