warning to bird lovers....
« on: March 11, 2007, 06:48:45 AM »

..........this is what happens when you use a paintball gun to try and keep the squirrels  out of the birdfeeder. Damn tree rats don't learn very fast. Guess I'll be replacing the plastic with something a little more shatter resistant.  ;D

I'm using my Tippmann 98 Custom paint-ball gun to keep the deer from eating up all my expensive landscaping.  They live on about 200 acres of school board-owned scrub woods and fields adjacent to the N.E. corner of my property.

By about this time of the year, they've eaten up almost all of their natural food on the 200 acres behind my house... and they begin "raiding" the landscaping in my and the neighbor's property to keep from starving to death.  It's sad to see their bony frames wobbling as they walk through the back of my property beyond my patio, but the school board, in their divine wisdom, won't allow hunting back there and there are no natural predators other than possibly a group of coyotes in this area (about 10 miles north of Dayton, Ohio) that are any threat to full grown whitetails.

Lately... I've began using it to "slap" the squirrels around as well when they get into and try to destroy my wild bird feeders.  I've got mostly Yankee Droll-type birdfeeders which aren't as vulnerable to damage as the type you have, Buck.

The paint-ball gun SEEMS to have the deer on the run these days... I haven't seen a deer around here for almost a week... and we use to see them several times a day prior to my going after them with the paint-ball gun.

Try throwing some bird seed on the ground and let the bushy-tailed little thieves sit there and eat.  They you'll get a better shot at 'em and you won't ruin your bird-feeders.    ;)

Freeze your painballs and the tree rats will be even less likely to return to the feeder if hit in the head

Not as much fun, but 4" stove pipe around the post or hanger will keep squirrels out of the feeder if they can't jump to it. I used to use a sling shot with a modified leather pouch filled with airgun BBs to chase them off, but the stove pipe ended that never ending ordeal, by the time they'd all been educated, the first ones forgot and started right back at it.  :-\
