Got the 45-70 bug
« on: March 11, 2007, 08:09:45 AM »
Local shop has synthetic with iron sights for $225.  Is that about the going price?  Gunbroker seemed a little higher.

This is the same shop where I got the turkey gun with the camo laminate stock for $125 out the door, which seems like a good price after seeing how much just the laminate stocks sell for.

I've got an RCBS single stage reloading press that I got in a trade.  I was gonna trade it off, but I guess this would be a good time to learn how to use it, since the 45-70 is so versatile.

You guys are costing me a lot of money.  Hanging out around here is like an alcoholic working at a bar.

Thats not a bad price at all , go for it , you will love it , i do mine and yes it is a great round to load for . just one thing with the Tupperwear stocks you may want to stay away from the top shelf loads or add some weight to the butt .  ;)

I am planning on putting the camo laminate straight stock on the 45-70 and the wood speedfeed type stock on the 12 ga.

Reloading is easy once you get the hang of it, right?  Just gotta be careful about the powder charge.

Other than a .38 Special or .357 Mag the 45-70 is one of the easiest calibers to start your reloading with. You are correct about just be watchful about the powder charge. Don't rush, double check, and everything will be fine. There are millions of reloaders in this country and it is a safe, enjoyable, and rewarding hobby. And about being bitten by the 45-70 bug, if your are going to get bitten you might as well as get bitten by a big bug!!! Congratulations on getting bit!....<><.... :D

Well Jon,

IT'S HOPELESS.

It's a black hole and you're coming with us..

I'd like to see a shooting report when you warm it up.

Nice wheels BTW.

Thanks Grizz!  The 4wd drive thing is fairly new for me.  Building a new beast in the garage.  Zuki Samurai frame, Toyota staight axles, with a chevy 4.3 engine.  Tube body and single center steer seat.  Running 36" IROKs.  The current Zuk has a broken axle due to Peckerwood Connector (Trail 7) at Tellico.

The 45-70 will be my 7th handi.  I was just swapping stocks around and found that the camo lam. had a weight in the stock.  I'll definitely be using that in the 45-70, since I'm a sissy about recoil while shooting left handed.

I've got work and school tomorrow, but Tuesday I'll try and get the new toy.  With tax return coming in, I should be able to budget it, but if not they have lay-away.

Got the 45-70 tonight!  Stopped by the gun shop tonight to look around again and the Handi was still there.  While looking at it, I realized it had an ejector barrel so I went ahead and bought it.  I took the synthetic stock off and replaced it the with lam. stock and weight that came on my NWTF shotgun.

Here is a pic of my future hog hunting guns.  The pistol is a Kimber Custom II w/ night sights and a Clark Custom .460 Rowland conversion.

I'll try to get some clearer pictures with natural light tomorrow.  This one is a little blurry and has too much flash white-out in it.

Thanks.  The nice thing about the .460 is that I can still shoot 45 ACP by just changing out the recoil spring.  That allows for alot of relatively inexpensive trigger time.  I have put 1000s of 45 rounds thru it, and my groups keep getting smaller and smaller.  I do shoot a decent amount of .460 just to stay used to the way the gun recoils and the massive amount of noise.  When shooting at the indoor range I wear ear plugs and muffs.  It always draws questions from the other shooters, who are normally impressed with the guns accuracy and surprised by the noise.  It goes BOOOOM like a rifle instead of Pop like a pistol.

I've noticed that if I take a month or so off from the range, my groups really suffer and it takes awhile to get back to an accuracy level that I am happy with.  I've never had that problem with rifles, but with such a short sight radius on a pistol, any little mistake is amplified.

Hopefully I'll be able to head up to the outdoor range in the next week or so and shoot the Handi.  The gun shop had a very limited choice of ammo, so I got Remington 405gr SP.  Hopefully the rifle will like them enough so that I can at least get sighted in.

Glad you got it. My 45-70 Handi is my favorite gun, and favorite round by far. I like the "thunk" that the 45-70 cartridge makes when you drop it in the chamber.

And yes, you should get into reloading. Most 45-70 ammo that I have seen is a buck per shot. I have seen some for .50 cents or so a shot, but you have to buy it in bulk.(I think) I reload and cast my own bullets, so I dont have more than 7 or 8 cents in each round. When I take out the 45-70, I shoot at least 50 rounds through it. There is no way I could afford to shoot it if I didnt reload. I use 11 grains of Unique under a 405 grain bullet. Thanks again to Stimpylu for posting that load! It is a real kitty cat load.
Not much recoil at all, and more than enough umphh to drop a whitetail.

I guess it's contagous. After getting mine I sold everything else but a Camp 9. The guys at the range call it Pumpkin Chunkin. I just love it when I move 5 lbs of dirt with every shot. I just purchased a varmint stock and JP Howitzer muzzel for it. I hope to work a load for it in the future but for now I use the 325grn from Hornady. The picture is a target set for just over 100 yrds. I know I can do better but at the time pain was an issue and the 3x9 scope that I had on it tapped my glasses more than once. I swaped it for a 2x32 shotgun scope. I can't wait to get back out there.
