Hey Bearfat,
        I recently bought a M44 Mosin Nagant at the Gander Mountain in Indiana.  Let me know how yours shoots.  I replaced my rear sight on mine so I can have some adjustment there.  I have only fired mil surplus rounds at the backstop for giggles and have no idea of how accurate or inaccurate mine is.  Let us know how yours shoots.

HuntingGuy that's probably the one I got but it was the M44 with folding bayonet attached. The M38 won't have a bayonet but will still be the same short carbine model. Apparently the market is getting flooded with the M44 now. Any of the Mosin Nagant are ok esp if SHTF. They're cheap as is the ammo. For a tad over $200.00 you can have a battle field ready firearm and 1000 rnds of ammo.

The one I picked up was gone over by the importer and they cleaned it up nice. It's a plain Jane with no serious collector value and will be a cabin work horse.

teddy12 did you get the Mojo sight? Or...?

I bought a 91/30 last fall and the results were dismal. I'm still tweaking that one..actually got an ajustable trigger I think someone sells on this site (Stan in SC?) Have yet to install it. I might put it on the M44 instead now.

My buddy has a M38 and it shoots very good.

I'll probably be shooting the M44 in a couple of weeks and will post results.

I got my sight on Midway.com.  It was easy to install.  Just knocked out a pin, switched the sights, then put the pin back in.

I was tempted to get the Mojo but for some reason after looking at it I thought, "The peep ghost ring is too far forward from my eye. It's just going to block out too much of the target esp. an animal."

Last night I just put on an Advanced Technology stock onto my old rifle and it looks awesome now!.  It's all a personal choice but I'd rather have a synthetic stock than a wood stock and I didn't expect much from Advanced Technology because most of their products look kinda cheap and porly made, but my new stock looks great!  I need to do a little bit of work fitting it to the stock but that's just some quality time with a file and sand paper. 

As far as sight picture with the Mojo rear sight, it's great!  I really really like looking through the sights now.  The trigger on mine has a lot of travel to it, but it's such a light pull I won't change it.  I just have to get the bayonet off the end and it may be going to canada for a bear hunt.  At least it'll be rifle range beater.  I don't want to put a scope on mine though, just the good old iron sights.

Do those stocks come on and off easy? I'm looking to save my wood plus it seems like I always get caught in the rain and have to tear them down to dry them. The swelling of the wood can effect accuracy too.

Mogo sight is great hmmmm....I may have to think about it. They always shoot high and that would eliminate dealing with that. Plus I love peep sights.

I've been eyeing that bayo too teddy12b. Just something extra to clink or get in the way when hunting, plus the weight.

"Wolf" hunting ammo has lots of 180 gr soft point but I found the Wolf 203 gr soft point was hard to find for me.

The surplus plinking ammo can have a residue on the case that heats up when fired and stays on chamber wall. If you get the sticky bolt syndrome clean the chamber good. I've been using "Flitz" on my surplus cases and have not had any probs.

Best to not say any of this modifying stuff outside of the Minnesota hunting forum since some frown on this activity with military rifles   

I have an M1 Garand and have used it in competition. I put mine in black fiberglass for above reasons and it's taboo. I also change out the gas plug to make it a single shot during hunting simply to not have to worry about the second shot jamming. Again taboo and I got lot's of gasps...

As far as the stock fitting nicely, no.  They're a lot that need to be carved out but it will fit nicely with a little work.  I was almost getting a single ragged hole with mine at 25 yards today with wolf and winchester 180 gr ammo.  I have a lot of filing to do on my  stock yet but for now it fits snugly and if a guy tried to run paper between the barrel and the stock he wouldn't have a chance. 

I tryed some hungarian surplus in mine first time out.  I actually had a case mouth seperate and lodge in the barrel.  The round looked nasty and I shot it anyway thinking I'd just be careful and sure enough.  Truth be told I'm lucky the thing didn't just blow up in my face.  I think I'm done with that particular kind of surplus ammo.

I understand that a lot of guys want to keep military surplus rifles as they are.  I respect that, and that was my original intention.  Once I had it in my hands though I wanted to see its full potential.  I'm not a big fan of wood stock and your M1 looked awesome by the way.

I still have more "fitting" to do with the stock and then I just need to hack off the bayonet if I don't find a better way to get it off.  It shot pretty good today all things considered though.

I did go to the advanced technology site and look at the stocks. I also thought there appeared to be a little elbow work to fit the stocks. That I don't mind doing with the limited gunsmithing skills I have.

I understand your "full potential" comment. We do it with other rifles. All of my stuff gets souped up one way or another with stocks, triggers, reloads, scopes, different sights, etcetera.

Do you feel the Mogo sight helped that much though to get a better sight picture? I do love the peep sights on the M1 and I've been thinking of putting them on a Browning BLR lever action 30-06 I have. My eyes are getting bad and these regular iron sights are tough to use and be humane on killing an animal.

Pretty much all of my guns have something about them that makes them just a little different than one you could just go pick up off a shelf somewhere.  That's part of what makes them mine.

With the original iron sight that was on my rifle I had no means to adjust the sights for left to right.  With the Mojo sight I have it zeroed.  The sight picture with the peep sight is good to me.  Then again I'm 27 with 20/20 vision so that may have something to do with how much I like it.  For what it is, the Mojo isn't cheap, but it seems to be very well built. 

I like the new sight much better than the old sight.  It's hard to say if somebody else will like it as much as I like mine because so much of it is personal preferance, my advice though, just get it and you'll be glad you did.

Keep me posted on other shipments of those Russian WWII rifles that come in but without the bayonets attached. They call them the M38 model.

I'm in no hurry. I have two now and like I say only want the non-bayonet model at this time.

We just sold the Nagant M44 last night.  Will make a good first deer hunting rifle for the kid who got it as a birthday gift.  Just turned 13!  COOOOL, Wish I got something like that when I was 13  I think I got something like a Red Ryder    I was sooooooooooo tempted to buy it

I would also throw in a Romanian M69 trainer for a bout 100 bucks.  Mine is superbly accurate.  It will make a great gun for getting small game.
