35 Whelen - Strike 2
« on: March 12, 2007, 06:02:48 AM »
had misfires with virgin brass, have to load to the lands to fireform   -  strike 1

now I had misfires with fireformed and partial full length sized brass -  strike 2

I think it will be a 2 strikes and you are out deal.  I called HR cust serv and they said they will exchange for another caliber.  So, I think I will send it in and get it replaced.  With the barrel acc program, I am able to get more barrels than I can experiment with at the loading table.  My time with this hobby is too short already, I dont want to spend it greasing a squeeky wheel.  In my world, the squeeky wheel gets replaced.

So, what to get,  24" 243 bull, 25-06, and a 280.  Notice I used the word "and"

Don't forget the .45Colt and .444Marlin barrels!! I just sent a frame in for a .444 barrel, they're gonna be 1:20" twist and broach rifled by Marlin themselves!! ;)

My 500 S&W was mis-firing about 50% of the time. I took about .010 off the front of the hammer so that more contact would be made on the transfer bar to try to get deeper firing pin marks. Up until this point, all primer dents were shallow.  On the second try with each mis-fire, the round went off. I'll try to get some time today and see if this modification helps the mis-firing problem.

What  is broach rifling?

Oops, sorry, I say get the 25-06.  Same long brass and same length barrel.  You;ll carry it the same all the time.  Unless you want the 444!!

Cutting all grooves in one pass with a special progressive broaching bit, called broached rifling.

Well I finally got to testing my theory. I had no mis-fires today and accuracy is definately improved now that I cut, drilled and tapped a shim to go between the front of the scope base and barrel. Verticle stringing has been cut in half to about a 4 1/2 inch verticle spread and horizontal spread is about 2 inches.  This definately helped to take a little off the hammer stop to eliminate mis-fires in this gun and primer dents are deeper also.
