Which is the "cleanest powder"?
« on: March 12, 2007, 08:50:30 AM »
Just checkin' to see what folks use and feel is the cleanest handgun powder in the fast/medium fast range suitable for 38 Special and 38 Special +p along with .45 ACP, 9mm Luger type cartridges. I mostly use the old standards: Unique and Bullseye, have tried American Select that was supposed to be "cleaner" but realy didn't notice a big difference - also tried Blue Dot and was wondering about any of the others out there...
Oh, have always used 2400 as my .357 Mag powder - any of the others really better?
Thanks,
DRD

never gave one thought about it. I look for accurate loads with any powder that will get it. Cleaning a gun is easy. Missing the target sucks

Well, if you have to stop shooting in mid-session (after a couple of hundred rounds) to clean your revolver because there is so much powder fowling around the cylinder and forcing cone, then cleaning is a pain.  ;D

Darkroomdan:

Try Winchester 231. Keep in mind that relatively low pressure loads like 800fps 38 specials are going to foul unavoidably, and you can't really expect very clean results. You can expect pretty clean results with 9mm because it's a higher pressure cartridge. Higher pressure loads will tend to burn cleaner.

Never had a revolver fail to fire because it was dirty from powder, though I never fired more than 100, maybe 150 rounds at a time.  As far as auto loaders, I've fired as many as 500 rounds loaded with Bulls Eye between cleanings.  Probably didn't need to then, but after a few trips to the range, curiosity finally got the best of me and I finally got around to cleaning it.  Most of my shooting is limited to 50 rounds at a time now and I take an hour or longer to shoot that.  Not because range time is by the hour, but I concentrate more on each shot rather than slinging lead downrange like i did in my younger days.

I'll vote for 231 also. For lite to mini mag it's hard to beat. I'm sure others are just as good but this is the one I've used most. Dirty is as dirty does. Bullet lube is a major player when shooting a sixgun. I've fired sixguns with Bullseye and Unique over 500 rounds with no problems except dirty hands. HEE HEE.................Creeker

In addition to 231, I have found American Select to be very clean.

For lite handgun I use H Universal. It is clean & works great in semi-auto's & lighter 38/357/44 mag loads. For heavy 357/44 loads I use Win 296.
