New Barret .416
« on: March 12, 2007, 03:12:57 PM »
I saw this little segment on the Discovery channel on "futureweapons" which dealt with a new sniper rifle and cartridge, the Barrett .416.  They didn't give ballistics but said it was designed to remain supersonic to 2500 yards! That's no typo, two thousand-five hundred yards. The show host, who claimed to be a former seal sniper, took one shot at a 36" bull and placed it about six inches below dead center at 2500 yards! In the movie "Sniper II" Tom Beringer claimed to have picked off a Cuban general at a mile and a half but that was a movie and one which took no trouble to get its' guns right. Like when fearless Tom picked up a Mosin-Nagant and proclaimed "Mauser '98, 7.9mm, best rifle the Germans ever built. Then in the next scene he had mounted a scope, altered the bolt and was off on a sniping mission, apparently without having ever fired a shot from his "Mauser".
But what do you all think of a "mile and a half sniper rifle"?  Sarah Brady will pee her pants!

True, afterall, someone, somewhere, sometime killed a cop with a 30/30 and you certainly don't need anything that can kill at more than 100 yards, no sportsman would ever hunt with such a thing.

I think it's great to have a rifle that can shoot that far. Think what the military could do with it.

Well of course that is the intended market.  Although the program gave no details it looks to be a shortened and sharp shouldered .50 BMG and the very sharp pointed bullets looked like they were lathe turned, perhaps from solid bar stock.

The actual market was for civilian use. It was a slap to the face of California for banning the 50 BMG. Here read it for yourself.

Thanks for the information Redhawk, I'm sure I'll never own one and probably never even see one but it is an interesting development.

I have thought about getting one, the shooting range that I am a member of banned the 50 BMG about 2 years ago, this would be another way for me to still engoy the big guns again.  ;D

Hell...she pees her pants over a 22 LR ;D

Nice rifle...I saw the segment with it...I also saw the segment 2 shows before it as well where the host was describing the 50 Barret...and held up 3 cartridges...in which he said the 223 which is fired thru the AR's...The 308 which is fired thru(according to him...the AK's)...and the 50 BMG.... ::)  Makes me wonder about him...

;D Just purchased the Barrett M99 in .416 Barrett on Saturday. Long bull barrel. It should really prove interesting to shoot. At about $6.00 a shot for factory ammo, that should also put a stop to plinking.
Shoot safely.....shoot tomorrow.

I hope a range report will be in order.

I can't actually pick it up until the 8th of May; CA 10 day waiting period and the shop owner didn't want to start the registration process until I paid the bulk of the $4,200. Go figure. A friend with a small  ranch is going to set up some steel plates and concrete blocks and, well, I'm sure its going to get ugly - for the plates and blocks. It comes with a 10X Bushnell 3200. I'm not all the excited about that, but I'm looking at a Leupold Mark 4 8.5x-25x and I was just turned on the Nigh Force scopes so I'm doing some research on those as well.  If anyone has had any experience with either or both please pass it along. They are both over a grand and that makes it just a little to expensive to resell or put in the back of the safe for another project some day.
Shoot safely.....shoot tomorrow.

I've had the 416 out twice now. The first time was to maker sure there was actually a hole in the barrel, yes there is, and the second time was to make sure the scope was properly adjusted. We shot rocks at 100 to 400 yards on the first outing. It definitely breaks rocks, impressively. I was surprised with the lack of recoil. I'm thinking something similar to a 308. Way cool. What it lacks in recoil it makes up for in muzzle blast. Its like getting hit in the face with a pillow. Takes a few rounds to get over it. The second outing was to the local range. At 100 yards I was looking at 2". I'm blaming some/most of that on me. I was shooting at a 3" black target. If I'd been shooting at a 1 inch target, the groups would have been smaller.  The local range has a 200 yard range but you have to be a member to use it, so Thursday at 7:00 is there monthly meeting and I can join. I'm looking forward to seeing what it does at 200. You have to shoot from the bench and you can't shoot laying down at this range. I really think the 416 can do way better than I venture to say it can do better than I can. We'll just have to keep practicing. At these close ranges, the 10 power Bushnell is more than enough. With the light recoil, the scope will last forever. The MIL DOT will be a problem out a extreme ranges. The dot will cover the target, particularly something like a ground squirrel or gofer. More to come later.
Shoot safely.....shoot tomorrow.

Where in CA are you located.  We have a range here in SoCal that goes to 600yds every day, that's paper level to 600, not aiming at plates, and once a month the range is available for paper to 1,000yds!!!  They shoot over the heads of where the 600yd shooters would sit, so they have to close the rest of the range for the 1000, that's why it's once a month.   Guys take the big guns there for that, all you have to do is be an NRA member, and help with range work couple times a year and it's about $70 a year for range membership.  It's a private range on US Forest Service land with a USFS locked gate we get the combo to.  here is a pic of the 600yd part, the base of the hill is 600yds.

Here's a link to their web site (new site), the map link shows ya where it is.

http://www.dmrpc.org/

I was a member for a while back, let the membership slide, and am going to join again real soon.  Just need to get off my butt and do it.  You can send me an email to slewis53@adelphia.net when you're coming and maybe I can get ya in as a guest.  I think the 1000yd schedule is on the site also.
