« on: March 13, 2007, 04:45:04 AM »
i have narrowed my search down to these 2 guns in 22 hornet, handi or the savage model 40, why should i chose the handi over the savage? i have read some good and bad about the savage, but it is supposed to be accurate.

Both my hornets are accurate, ultra light & regular barrel contour. Have 3 & sending for a 4th 2 will becore rechambered to a 218 bee & 221 fire ball, possibly a third to a 219 wasp way down the road.
Do the handi & you can add other barrels to it

Nerver seen a Model 40 yet, and that may be the biggest draw back there are still not that many around (mind you things are sometimes slow to make it accross the border) . From the few reports I have seen the model 40 has very good accuracy potential.  Probably on of the biggest consideration is are you thinking of shooting off of a bi-pod the one piece stock has a clear advantage there. The accu-trigger if it is like my buddy's 223 wins hands down. You can do a trigger job on the handi but out of the box the savage wins

The handi advantage 2 models superlight and regular I have the superlight and handy does describe it light and small, and you have the options to get other barrels fitted to the action. One other thing if you get the but to go to k-hornet (I have this past month) the handi is a quick conversion, I can't say if the savage could be converted I understand the barrel is pressed and pinned in the action.

Why should you choose 1 over the other? Well...exactly what are you wanting...If your wanting a switch barrel rifle that you can easily change to another caliber of rifle or a shot gun barrel to..or muzzle loader barrel to...The Savage won't get you there...If your wanting a dedicated bolt action varmint rig with all of what bolt actions offer...then the Savage is the better choice. These are 2 totally different platforms...The biggest draw is being able to choose which caliber you want...then buying that barrel and putting it on in a matter of a minute or two ...all at a cheaper price than the other...Both can and do shoot good...Both are single shots...Both are good guns and in a good caliber...There are many advantages to having both......What type of rifle do you want?

i did not know if i wanted to spend the extra bucks on the savage. this gun will be shot mostly off a bipod after ground hogs. i heard that savage had some problems with stuck shell casings. i dont know if i will get any extra barrels or not.

the savage is built on a rimfire action so i thought the handi would be a stronger lock up.

I think you should handle both guns.
The handi will be shorter and quicker I think. Better for walking around. Especialy the superlight.
Savage might be better for long bi pod sessions though.
Having to break your gun in half for a follow up shot is not handy with a bi pod.
You can't keep your target in sight.

I think the correct wording is it is BASED on a rimfire action.  The model 40 is stronger than all other of thier rimfires, but they are very similar.  I'm not sure but I do think the model 40's barrel is threaded in, like I said, not sure there.  I read an article a while back but don't remember.

I own several savages, and own several Handi's, if you were talking any other centerfire, I'b probably recommend the Savage (again that would depend on a few other things) but in the Hornet, I say go the Handi.

On the other end of the spectrum, I have a Savage 223 that I make reduced loads, from Hodgdons data, that match the Hornet.  40-45gr bullets at 2400-2500fps.  I'm getting one hole groups at 50yds with.  BUT this is an 11FL, NOT a model 40.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!
