That was a great story.

It sounds to me like the man made a good shot, but didn't give the bear time to die.  The other hunters said that they saw the bear sitting and laying down then getting up an fleeing.  I'd say if they backed off and let the bullet continue to do it's work, this never would have happened.  If I had to guess, I'd say that they were so excited about the size of the bear the immediately tore off after it.  Unless I see it drop, I don't even do this with deer!

dcewolf.

Thanks for sharing this story with us, It does make you stop and think about where you are and how do you get to where you wish to be. In this case Thurman Hensley was doing what he thought was the right thing to do under the conditions that existed  which in fact was not the right thing to do. I am glad that Mr. Hensley came out of the situation as good as he did. Thanks again for the story......Joe.......

That story got alot of outdoor press here in VA, but those are the first pictures I've seen of the bear.  Wow!  I hunt fairly near the Shenandoah Nat'l Park myself and have seen plenty of bear on my property.  Nothing that size though.  Part of the motivation for following up so quickly may have been to try and recover it before it got into the park where no hunting is permitted.

"The bear was probably a parent"!!  Right!  We all know how warm and supporting those papa bears are when it comes to their young'ns!!

The first few stories that came out about this one were...well "incomplete" at best.  At least the ones I heard...made it sound like the fella was a total idiot.
This one goes into a bit more detail.

Gotta admit too, I couldn't imagine seeing a 600 pounder go strolling by my stand in VA.  He was a biggun for round here.
