Photos of game species
« on: March 13, 2007, 06:08:18 PM »
Does anyone have a web address for good photos of the different game species. I've found one but it is lacking. I think the outfittters and PH's should have one which tells you what is avaible, where and where the biggest can be found. It could have links to medical questions as to what shots you need and when to start them. Permits for importing rifles, bans and if there is miniums for calibers or for that matter bows.

I plan on going in four years and as much information I can get ahead of time may save me time and money.

I've been "collecting" different South Africa and Namibia (those are the only African countries I'm interested in going to) web sites for some time.  I've found them in different forums online, in SCI's Safari magazine, and in literature given me directly by outfitters.  If you collect enough, you will find all the information you need.  You can post specific questions here as well.

In regards to Namibia:

1.  Bows OK and crossbows not OK.
2.  Rifles only and no semiautos.
3.  Caliber .270 and above for plains game and .375 and above for dangerous game.  Expanding bullets for everything except elephant.
4.  Rifle importation allegedly easy with a simple form to fill out on arrival in Namibia.
5.  Malaria prophylaxis advisable in some areas.

In regards to South Africa:

1.  Bows OK in some areas.  I don't know about crossbows.
2.  Rifles and handguns allowed but no semiautos or guns for "self defense."  They have to be hunting firearms.
3.  Caliber largely at the discretion of the PH and hunter.  Solids at the hunter's discretion.
4.  An intimidating firearm importation form to fill out for the South African police.  It's actually not as bad as it looks because only 2 of the 5 or 6 pages need be completed by a prospective hunter.
5.  Malaria prophylaxis advisable in some areas.

The above information is of course very superficial and subject to change.  You will need up to date information before you go which your outfitter and travel agent should be able to provide you with.  You might also consider joining the Safari Club International.  The $55/year membership fee would be worth it for information to plan your trip.
