.38-55 Brass in 2.085 length
« on: March 14, 2007, 12:33:11 PM »
I had a pleasant surprise today.  I received two fifty bags of .38-55 Winchester brass today from Midway that was 2.085 " in length.  Everything I had heard was that only the shorter brass like .375 Winchester was being found.  Just thought I would share the good news.

Good for you.  I wonder just how long the brass is before the factories trim it for caliber?  I'd like to have some that is about 2.5", kinda like a 45-90 is to the 45-70, maybe a 38-70?

adding an additional 1.25" to a 38-55, now that would be an interesting cartridge

Handirifle, try this:

Hmmmmm, now you REALLY have the gears turning.  With that length, using BP and cast, I bet that would fling a 300gr slug a fair piece.  Wouldn't have a clue where to start with smokeless.  What I REALLY wish is to make this a very special barrel, is to get a custom, cut rifling, twist rate, say 1-12, to handle the heavier slugs.

I was thinking.....use a good 375 barrel. Most are 1-12". You could load it with 375 winnie dies except for punching out the primer which you could do by hand.

Yea, except I was thinking of a Handi narrel.  Th3 38-55 is the closest and the bore is sometimes iffy.  Will have to wait and see.
