H&R fit 22's & 17's to handi frames?
« on: March 16, 2007, 04:17:31 AM »
Can I get 22 and 17 cal barrels fit to my handi frame?
If life is a beach, why am I so crabby?

Supposedly, the versa-pack 22lr barrels (part of a 22lr/shotgun combo) will work on a handi frame, since they are offset to fire with the same firing pin as the shotgun barrel.
H&R does not sell this barrel separately, apparently.  Your only option therefore is to buy the barrel used, or buy the combo.  My local Gander has the synthetic youth combo 22lr/20ga for, *I think*, $130.

Until today, I had noticed a combo pack listed on RRArms that included 17hmr/22lr/223.  They never had any in stock that I saw, so I don't know if H&R ever released them. That combo is no longer listed.

HTH.

If your talking about a centerfire frame working for a rimfire barrel no it will not work

That youth combo 20 gauge /.22 LR for $130 sounds like a great deal, if you want it for the shotgun buy it and I will give you 1/2 whatever you end up paying for the whole gun for the .22 LR barrel shipped to me....<><.... ;)

I'll keep that in mind. Funny thing is, they don't have them out on the floor.  I just found out they had them by asking "what other handi's do you have?"

I'm thinking about the youth combo for my daughter, who, at 5'2", is reaching a bit on a standard length stock.

Backstrap,

The Versa Pac's rim fire barrel's bore is off center so that it is properly situated for the firing pin on a center fire frame to strike the rim of the rim fire cartridge.

At least one member here has mounted and successfully fired a Versa Pac .22lr barrel on an SB1 (shotgun) frame.  I am awaiting the arrival of that same barrel for use on a Topper shotgun frame.

Rossi markets a similar break action, rimfire/shotgun combination.

I was reading this string..and decided to settle the question....right now !

So, just a couple minutes ago I went to my gun locker and got my Handi SB2 (223 bull) rifle out along with my versa-pack (22/410).
I removed both barrels and put the Versa-pack .22 LR on the Handi SB2 (223) ..it fit and locked up fine..
I took it to my back yard and it fired and worked just as it does with the Versa-pack..

A couple years ago, I bought the Rossi equivalent and later gave it to my Grandaughter...

If anyone thinks the Rossi "matched pair" is the equivalent of the NEF Versa-pack...IMHO..think again !

The Rossi version is a bit more compact in the receiver area and the shotgun barrel works very well..

The rifle barrel, from my experience, has nowhere near the inherent accuracy of the NEF (mine looks top be microgroove)

The basic sights on the Rossi were plastic, with blue steel allen screw adjusters..front sight screw stripped in the threads, the rear sight so flexible, that when I tried to tighten it in the dovetail..I soon noticed that the plastic dovetail was flexing and had pulled half way out..directly upward..

Perhaps that part has been changed since then, but it sure was a bummer then.

IMHO..the NEF is worth at least 2 Rossi rifles..
