Drop Away Rests
« on: March 16, 2007, 08:59:05 AM »
Please post any advice/experience you have regarding a drop away rest. I shoot a lefty Mathews Outback at 70 lbs., 29 inch draw with 28 in. arrows. I am currently switching to Gold Tip XT hunters and am thinking about installing a drop away. I would appreciate your advice. Oh and the rest will have to have enough mounting slot holes/room for a 2 inch overdraw. And another thing: won't a drop away totally eliminate fletching contact ?

I put a drop away on my Hoyt a couple years ago, and will never go back to a fixed.  I would do away with your overdraw, no need for one with the new bows.  I can't remember the model that it is but it has a big craddle that the arrow sits in. Yes it eliminates fletching contact.

Thanks. I installed a QAD Hunter and seems to work well. A little more noise but I am working on that.

I'm installing a Trophy Taker Drop Away on my Mathews Solocam Black Max 2.

Absolutely nothing like the flawless flight characteristics you'll get for a quality fall away rest. I have a great deal of experience with numerous fallaway rests on the market and have set up many dozens of rigs for others as well. My personal fav thus far has been the Trophy Ridge Drop Zone. I've shot the rest in every imaginable hunting and weather condition that the Midwest has thrown at me and it has NEVER malfunctioned or cost me a shot. From 100+ degree summer heat and dust to the brutal sub zero temps of our mid Jan late archery season... the TR DZ has been an awesome performer. I also love the fact that the vertical laucher clears the arrow and fletching faster than other rests. Silent, smooth, perfect flight..... why wouldn't anyone want to shoot one?

An archer tries to see how far away he can get from his target and still connect, a "Bowhunter" tries to see how close he can get to his.

I have had great success since switching from aluminum to Gold Tip XT Hunters. Got a dramatic increase in speed also after shedding 115 grains of total arrow weight and going from 65 to 70# draw weight. Increase averaged over 3 shots through a chrono was 247fps to 283fps.

I use a Muzzy Zero Effect and have used it now for 4 seasons and never had a problem. The design makes it impossible for the arrow not to be on the rest unless maybe your bow is upside down that is. Works for me anyway. Pics at http://www.bghi.us/index.php?x=ultra2
