Remington 700 scope mount?
« on: March 16, 2007, 11:41:22 PM »
I have a 700 ADL (I think) in 30-06 which I bought used.  It came with a cheap scope and see thru rings rings made by Weaver, I believe.  I could not get my scope adjusted properly with that mount as I could not bring the scope back far enough so I bought a different set with the Weaver bases and rings at Wal-Mart, non-see thru.  Now, the bolt will not clear the scope when I open it.  The package clearly said it was for Remington 700s.  I am looking for recommedations on different mounts as well as the possibilty that higher rings will resolve this problem.

Also, since I bought this used 1 1/2 years ago, I am not sure if it is a 700 ADL as it only says 700 on the barell with nothing after the 700.  It has a black synthetic stock, blued barrel, and iron sights and NO detachable magazine.  I have looked on-line and am pretty sure it is an ADL but someone let me know if I am wrong.

With the 2 piece mounts you have, being a short action or long action shouldnt matter so Ill save you some reading.

I have no idea what exact mounts you bought so I cant help much. Sounds like you bought Low ones though. There are different heights for mounts, I usually go with Medium myself. Low would never cut it with my scopes because the objective end is 2 large and would hit the barrel.

As long as youre sure its a model 700, get some good mounts online from reputable websites. I recommend http://www.swfa.com/

Maybe get a cheap Leupold standard 1 piece base with standard Medium 1" rings(I doubt you have a 30mm tube unless its of the  tactical variety so 1" rings it is).

What caliber is the rifle? Oops, good ole .06, Long action it is.

I havent checked prices in a while but I think I paid 50.00 for the base and rings a couple years back. A tad more than what you probably got at Walmart but well worth it in the long run.

** What kind of scope? Its 7am and Im bored  ;D

If my ramblings arent making any sense, my excuse is I just worked an 11 hour shift. Off to bed I go!

get some Weaver medium rings.  Ugly as frozen snot but they work as good as any and better than most.  If you buy them at a gun shop versus Wally's, you'll pay a few extra bucks for them but they will often put them on for you.....  While trying to sell you some exotic mounts for three times the money.  ;)

I agree with sniperVLS and beemanbeme about medium height rings probably being ok for clearance but I have placed high rings on an ADL simply because I wanted the extra clearance for loading the ADL easily.

You did not say if the new rings helped the problem of getting the scope back far enough for you...

When you tighten the rings try for an even gap between the upper and lower rings all around (depends on style). I don't use a full handed grip on the screw driver either. I only use three fingers on the screw driver handle and...as tight as that limited grip can get me is all I do.

If the rings are of good quality you will hear a little "tweak or squeak" the last quarter turn or so out of them. But if not don't worry about it. I've swaped out dozens of scopes with above technique on 30-06's shooting max powder charges.

I'm sure others might comment on different ways too. I don't oil or loctite ring screws either. I run them dry.

bearfat, the new rings did get the scope where I wanted it but the bolt is now in the way.  I will try medium rings.  Also, with the bases I have, the one base which goes on the barell side of the receiver has that extra little length.  The instructions with the bases did not show if the little extra lenth hangs over the barrel end  or the receiver.  Either way it is not touching any metal.  Which side does it go on?

I'd flip it so it does not impede loading your rounds.

You know you could go with high rings to make absolutely sure the bolt handle clears and you don't have to again go back again for another set    :(

Like I say I use them on my ADL's for the extra clearance in loading.

On some of my scopes and or single shots with hammers I go with "super high" rings but those are hard to find and usually a special order.

New bases too...? Hmmm...you didn't mention that. That can bring up a whole new conversation about "locktite" on the screws. I've done it with and without. Pretty much everyone is in agreement NOT TO USE RED LOCTITE.

But having said that I have tried red loctite and was able to get the screws out without stripping them. (maybe it was outdated, weak stuff?)

You don't have to use loctite though. Many people don't.

A little clear fingernail polish on the screws don't hurt nothing.  (kinda like chicken soup).  I hate high rings 'cause I can't get my cheek on the stock.

Yaaa that's right I forgot about fingernail polish (hardener). Does a fine job and the womenfolk always seem to have some around.

For some reason I'm lucky with rifles and not needing a good fit. It doesn't seem to matter where or how crazy I have to twist my head...it does not bother me or my shot.

Even with my scoped AR-15 and my head almost in a vertical postion I don't care.

Shotguns make a diff for me though.

These extended front bases are reversible.  If your scope is short between the adjustment turret and the flare for the objective bell, you can let the overhang come off rearward so that you have a little more latitude in positioning of the scope for eye relief.  On the other hand, if you have a scope with a real long main tube, turning it the other way will allow a better support of the scope.  You are probably aware that there are many scope configurations out there and the bases you have give you some options that you might need for your particular scope.  Sounds like you will need to use at least medium height rings for your scope.  Almost everybody sells rings that mount on the Weaver bases, so pick some  you like and you'll be good to go.  My favorite is the Burris Signature Zee rings.  They have plastic inserts in the rings that protect the surface of your scope.
