nice article in T&PC

Tom, nice article in the T&PC. Punching indentations in the houses would definately would give us other places to set. I have just one question. In WI do you think this would be classified as molesting a muskrat house or den. I hope not because this would be another way we can go after them.  Thanks Shawn.

Shawn check with your LOCAL  Wisc conservation warden as he will determine what is molesting vs just making a set a muskrat house...  Always check with your local warden as wardens in differant areas  see  and do things differant .  Most wardens do not have ANY training in trapping ect at all except in law enforcement.  All new wardens now days in Wisc do go thru fur school in thier training so have some idea but maybe not in setting traps ect.

 Shawn,thank you.
As you noticed ,I use my fist --not a trowel to make this set.I am also not going all the way into the hut--just the outside.Even those trappers that set the slides ,move vegetation around to make a trap bed.Is this considered molestation?.Also when done trapping, you can take a couple handfuls of mud and vegetation, and fill in your set location.
Lee is right, check with your C.O.,I do not consider the sets I make,molesting--one reason I don't use a digging tool.

I'm glad to hear that two different trappers believe that this method for setting doesn't meet the idea of molesting a den or house.  Earlier this past season I asked a question about how to trap rats, and Tom  replied with the technique of punching in a place to set a trap at the water line. I used this with great success. I did one more thing to each set. I would put a little bit of muskrat all call. I would place it back in the hole above the water line. I think it did help as I didn't do it at all the sets. The only reason I asked if it could be considered molesting is that I was talking to a guy that used to trap rats and I told him about how I was doing and he said that I was molesting the houses. I didn't think so. I will try to get a hold of a warden that knows something about trapping.
Thanks Shawn
P.S. Tom also stated in his response to my question no lath allowed. Heed that warning as I aslo caught a coon, and had an otter that was released.
