3/4 scale Field Cannon
« on: March 18, 2007, 04:57:16 AM »
Here"s a Cannon I recently completed.  It is a 2.25" bore barrel, 40" diameter wheel cannon.  Any one interested in a cannon of this type can reach me at: dwc414@hotmail.com.  Dom

That looks Awesome!!! Could you show some close ups of the firing mechanism? Looks like a slap hammer.

Thanks, Wes

Wes, Thanks for the compliment!  Here's a picture of a hammer on another cannon.  It is a 2-1/4" long piece of 1-1/4" wide  x 1/2" thick flat stock with a vertical hole through the depressed section at top center.  A knotted string runs through the top and out to the rear.  when the hammer is rotated rearward, the string fits in a groove cut around the circular rear part of the hammer. The tabs are 1/8" flat tig welded to the barrel.  A 1/4" bolt and flat washers between hammer and tabs mount the hammer to the barrel.  I use .22 caliber blanks in a .230 hole for ignition.  The .22 will fire with the flat portion of the hammer striking it. [it does not need a raised nub to do so.]  The hammer shown is brass.  I'll see if I have any other better close-up photos in my archives. Thanks, Dom

Wes, here are some pix of a slap hammer intergrated with a sight.  Much like Dominicks dimensions, mine is a contoured plate held down by a 1/2" USS machine bolt, bored for a 5/16" musket nipple and fuse hole.  The sight is retractable and intended to be removed before fireing.  It is held in place by two 1/4" blank studs.  There is a stud behind the hammer that allows you to pull the lanyard from eather side or streight back.
If I were to do it over again, I would probably use a flat plate, not contoured, and glass bed it with Fast Steel Epoxy.  It would save a lot of time in fabraicating the sight and attatching the hammer tabs.
Hope this will help.  I don't have any plans, it was just hacking and hewing.  As you can see the project is not finnished or painted, the shop was a little cold this winter.

GREAT PIX!

I really like the idea of turning the direction of the lanyard 90 degrees too!

That is really nice, i like the simplicity of it no springs just a well designed hammer.  It was hard to tell what was going on from the first pics, but those detail shots really put together the whole thing.  Way to go.

dominick, Good looking gun. Is that a jig for cutting the mortises in a wheel hub sitting on the bench in the eighth picture down. Looks like an index pin in the end. I recently made one to make a wooden spoke wheelbarrow wheel. Always like to see how others do things.

It dose look like a jig for a wheel hub, to mark for the fellies. looking at the end, the metal plate rotates, you can see the ware ring from the pin rubbing. The holes for the index are slightly visable.  It looks like a good way of marking out for the fellies.

I machined a steel hub to slide over the hub with 14 evenly spaced marks for the mortis for the fellies.

This is a jig I made for the hubs on a 1/5 th scale #1 field gun carraige.  It has a 1/2 scale hub mounted on it now.  Nothing fancy or for production.  It's set up for 14 spokes at 25.7 deg each.
