50 BMG bullets, wow.
« on: May 14, 2003, 01:21:58 PM »
Hello Guys and Gales, :D

I know this is not swaging. But, I just got back from a gun show and picked up two loaded and two unloaded cartridges of the 50 BMG’s, man what monsters   they are. The bullets are bigger than my “S” dies, except for the diameter. And the bullets weigh up to 750 to 800 grains, that’s insane, over a tenth of a pound, over 1.6 ounces. May be you bigger guys out there can deal with this but I don’t think I could. You would have to go to the hydraulic press for this one. And there are people out there that are even shooting the 20mm’s, some where in the neighborhood of 0.787 inches. And I thought my little .45-70 was big.

BTW, just ordered my swaging dies for my .45-70 through Dave Corbin. I plan on making them out of copper tubing, since I’m already setup for that tubing with the .035 wall thickness. I figure why not? Its just money, right? Well, you can’t take it with you.

Donna

Its amazing what a good muzzle brake and 30 extra pounds of gun will do for reducing recoil.

Can anyone elaborate on just what is involved in the legal process when a private civilian wants to own a weapon with a rifled barrel over .50 caliber?  Shotguns don't seem to fall under as much legislation.

Firing a 20mm cannon somewhere out in the desert (from a tripod mount with pintle and T&E) would make for an enjoyable afternoon but as far as I know, I can't own one.

Hello , I'm a new guy here but have dealt with class 3 weapons for a long time . Anything above .50 in a rifle requires a license , Curio & relics at least . I built my 50 because anything bigger was too much hassle .

Donna,

The 50BMG in a well built properly stocked rifle is a pure joy to shoot. Its very simple to load for and at the cost of bullets well worth setting up to swage your own. I completely agree that getting involved with anything beyond 50 cal is not worth the hassle for most of us. Glad to see you post again, had read some of your earlier posts.
