45-70 problem
« on: March 18, 2007, 05:13:12 PM »

Hey
I have a problem . a friend knows of my handloading exploits and asked me to load up a 4570 round with 3 each that is 3 round balls in one case. I have it figured out that it will work. This is what I have figured so far. Powder, wool wad. .457 rb 3 each lubed with my own lube, slight crimp. I also figured that the charge should be of the 410 shotgun charge. here is my problem what charge of what powder. I have 4227 for my 357 loads and I have red dot. what do you think?????? I do not load shotgun I have loaded rifle and pistol for 35 years. I have never heard of a round like this for a 45-70 have any of you????????? help

Just say no! If he's your friend he'll understand.

Howdy,
The US Govt actually issued a simular load for the old trapdoors, but they were loaded with smaller shot (00 I think). If you can find it, there is a magazine article printed in the National Rifleman  entitled " The 45/70: from mice to elephants" it lists several  special purpose loads for the 45/70. You might also have your friend go to evilbay and buy one of those "complete" load books for the 45/70.
Since you are talkin' about .457dia bullets, I wouldn't think pressure would be too much problem since they are well under bore size for a .458 bore, But if I were doin this, I would try either fffg black powder or cleanshot  or, H777 until a knew for sure the bullets were gonna act. My favorite plinkin load for my single action 45LC's is a .457dia swadged round ball over about 30gr of fffg 777with the all seated about halfway in and lightly crimped.
JMHO,

I've done it with two 45 Colt bullets that I paper patched together and loaded.  Check the total weight and determine powder charge.  I used Unique.  Interesting to shoot, but at 100 yards I was getting impacts over 10 feet apart.  Stopped and went to the 25 yard range with the close backstop and fired up the rest of them.  Didn't want to launch one over the rifle berm

I've done the 3 round balls in the 45-70 before.  I found the recipes in an old Gun Digest.
45-70 Government
3 - .457" round balls, 144 grains each, 432 grains total, approximately 2.30" COAL
R-P brass, 2.1" trim, full length size
WLR primer
18 to 22 grains of IMR4227

Puts three balls into a paper plate at 25 yards.
We learn something new everyday whether we want to or not.
